Google AI Mode is a conversational search mode inside Google Search. You ask a question, often a long or multi-part one, and it writes an AI answer with links to the web pages it drew on, then lets you ask follow-ups. Google says it splits a question into subtopics and searches for each at the same time.

This guide covers what AI Mode is, how it differs from AI Overviews and the Gemini app, where it is available, how it picks its sources, and what a brand can do to be cited. Every statement about AI Mode comes from Google’s own blog, Search Central documentation or Search Help, linked where it is used and listed at the end.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google’s help page describes AI Mode as its AI search experience: you can ask anything, get an AI-powered response, go deeper with follow-up questions and follow links to the web (Google Search Help). It is meant for questions that might once have taken several searches, such as exploring a new concept or comparing options. You can ask with text, voice, images or files, including PDFs, and paste a web address to ask about that page.

How it builds an answer. Google describes a “query fan-out” technique: AI Mode divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously across multiple data sources, then brings the results together into one response. Search Central puts it as “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” (AI features and your website). Google’s optimisation guide adds that these features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and use retrieval from the Search index (also called grounding) to show links to pages that support the answer (Optimizing your website for generative AI features).

When it does not answer. If Google does not have high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response, AI Mode shows a set of web links instead. Google also says AI Mode does not always get it right and may misinterpret web content or miss context, and asks people to check important information in more than one place.

The model. AI Mode launched on a custom version of Gemini 2.0 in March 2025 (Google blog) and moved to a custom version of Gemini 2.5 in the US in May 2025 (Google blog). On 19 May 2026 Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode globally and said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users (Google blog). The help page also lists Gemini 4 Argon, which Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can choose in AI Mode, with daily limits.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews and Gemini?

They are three different Google products, and each can draw on different sources. This table uses only Google’s own descriptions.

Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show will vary. The two are joined up: on mobile you can select Show more under an AI Overview and type a follow-up to continue in AI Mode, and in May 2026 Google said it was bringing them together into one AI Search experience across desktop and mobile. Google-Extended, by contrast, does not affect whether a site is included in Google Search.

Where is Google AI Mode available?

Google has widened AI Mode in steps. In its own announcements:

  • 5 March 2025: AI Mode was announced as an opt-in experiment in Labs, with Google One AI Premium subscribers invited to try it first (Google blog).
  • 20 May 2025: AI Mode started rolling out to everyone in the US with no Labs sign-up, as a tab in Search and in the Google app’s search bar (Google blog).
  • 21 August 2025: Google expanded AI Mode to over 180 new countries and territories in English (Google blog).
  • 8 September 2025: Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese were added (Google blog).
  • 7 October 2025: more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories, for over 200 countries and territories in total, including many across Europe (Google blog).
  • 19 May 2026: a redesigned Search box began rolling out in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available (Google blog).

Today Google’s AI Mode help page lists the supported countries, territories and languages in full, across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It is the place to check a specific market. Some features have their own, narrower lists: Gemini 4 Argon, for example, and interactive visuals, which the page says are available to signed-in users in English.

How to open AI Mode. Google lists three ways: go to google.com/ai; go to google.com, enter a question in the Search bar and select AI Mode; or tap AI Mode on the home screen of the Google app. AI Mode in Search Labs, for early features, is open to users aged 18 and over.

How does AI Mode pick its sources?

Google’s answer is that AI Mode works from the same index, and the same SEO fundamentals, as the rest of Google Search. From AI features and your website and the newer optimisation guide (last updated 10 July 2026):

  • Indexing and snippet eligibility are the requirements. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
  • No special markup. You do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and there is no special schema.org structured data to add.
  • The Search Console setting. The optimisation guide adds that a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible. Inclusion is the default for every property (Search Console Help).
  • No guarantee. Meeting every requirement does not mean Google will crawl, index or show a page.
  • Fan-out widens the set of links. While an answer is generated, Google says its models identify more supporting pages, so AI features can show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic web search.

Preview controls. Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control for how a site is crawled for Search, AI features included. To limit what is shown from your pages, use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex; Google’s Search Central blog adds that more restrictive settings limit how your content is featured in AI experiences (Search Central blog). If content still appears after a change, check what Googlebot received with the URL Inspection tool and allow time for a recrawl, which Google says can take from several days to several months.

What Google says you can skip. The optimisation guide lists things you can ignore for Google Search: llms.txt and other special files (Google Search ignores them, though they are fine to keep for other services), breaking content into small chunks, rewriting content just for AI, seeking inauthentic mentions, and overfocusing on structured data. It also warns that making separate pages for every variation of a query, including fan-out queries, mainly to manipulate AI responses breaks Google’s scaled content abuse policy.

Links in answers are changing. On 15 October 2026 Google said it had increased inline links in its AI experiences and was showing them higher in responses more often, and that it was testing a dedicated section for official websites on some queries (Google blog).

How to check whether your brand appears in AI Mode

In Search Console. The Generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with pages, countries, devices and dates; Google rolled it out to all websites on 31 August 2026 (Search Console Help). It counts impressions of your links. It does not show the answer, whether your brand was named without a link, or who was cited instead.

For a single search, free. Noma’s AI Mode rank checker takes a search query, your website and your market. It runs that search on Google once, reads the top 100 organic results and notes where your site ranks. In the same run it reads the AI Overview, if Google shows one, and asks AI Mode the same question. For each answer you see the text and the pages it cites, whether your site is cited, named but not cited or not cited, and which domains are cited instead, each with its own Google position. Results are desktop only and a snapshot of one search. A single search needs no signup.

Every day, alongside other engines. Noma by Nurdd tracks Google AI Mode as one of 13 AI engines. AI Mode is an add-on engine: for each tracked prompt Noma reads the AI Mode answer Google gives in your country, with the pages it cites. Every plan includes ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and plans start at $79 a month (pricing). AI Mode and the Gemini app can name different brands for the same question, so the Gemini visibility tracker reads Gemini’s answers separately.

How brands get cited in Google AI Mode: six steps

Each step below restates Google’s guidance in AI features and your website and the optimisation guide, with the Noma tool or guide that helps with it.

Step 1. Let Google crawl and index the page

Check that robots.txt, your CDN and your hosting allow Googlebot, that the page returns HTTP 200 and that it can be indexed. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Mode.

The free AI Mode SEO checker tests whether Googlebot can crawl a page, whether it can be indexed and whether its text is in the HTML.

Step 2. Check your snippet controls and your Search Console setting

nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google can show from a page, including in AI features. In Search Console, Settings > Search generative AI should include your site, which is the default.

A data-nosnippet attribute on a block, or a low max-snippet value, limits what Google can show from that page, in AI Mode as well as in the results. If a page ranks but is never cited, these are worth checking.

Step 3. Write unique, non-commodity content

Google's guide says content people find unique, compelling and useful matters more than any of its other suggestions: a first-hand view or experience, not a summary of what is already online.

Google contrasts commodity content, built from common knowledge, with non-commodity content that offers an expert or first-hand take; its example is a first-hand review rather than a summary of existing content. Our guide to how AI engines choose citations covers the same idea across engines.

Step 4. Keep important content in text, with clear structure

Put key information in text, organised in sections with headings, and support it with high-quality images and video where they help the reader.

Google says its AI features can bring in relevant images and video, so a page that follows image and video SEO practice has more ways to appear than a page link.

Step 5. Make structured data match the page and keep business details current

No special schema.org markup is needed for AI Mode, but any structured data should match the visible text. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.

Where it fits, Google says AI responses can include product listings and local business information drawn from Merchant Center and Business Profile.

Step 6. Measure in Search Console, then check the answers

Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for impressions in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and check what AI Mode says and cites for the questions your buyers ask.

Search Console shows impressions. To see the answer itself, the sources it cites and the competitors it names, run the AI Mode rank checker, or read how to check your position in AI Mode and how to optimise content for AI Mode.

Questions people ask

Is Google AI Mode free?

Google's AI Mode help page lists no subscription for using AI Mode, which you can open at google.com/ai. A paid Google AI Pro or Ultra plan is named only for extras, such as the Gemini 4 Argon model in AI Mode, which also has daily usage limits.

How do I turn AI Mode off?

Google's AI Mode help page does not describe a setting that turns it off. You reach AI Mode by choosing it: at google.com/ai, with the AI Mode button after a search, in the Google app, or by asking a follow-up from an AI Overview. For AI Overviews, Google says Search features cannot be turned off, but the Web filter shows only text links.

Is AI Mode the same as Gemini?

No. AI Mode is part of Google Search: it answers from Google's Search index and links to the web pages it drew on. The Gemini app is Google's separate AI assistant, for tasks such as brainstorming, planning, summarising and drafting. Both run on Gemini models; Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode in May 2026.

Does AI Mode use my website?

It can, if your page is indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in Google Search. Google says there are no additional technical requirements. Your page can then appear as a link in an AI Mode answer and help ground the answer, though Google does not guarantee that any page is shown.

Can I opt my site out of AI Mode?

Yes. Since 31 August 2026 every site has a Search generative AI control in Search Console, under Settings. Excluding your site keeps its links and content out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover; Google says the choice is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and it takes a few days to apply. nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex also limit what Google shows.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Mode?

No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in AI Mode, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt files. Structured data still helps with rich results, as long as it matches the visible page.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Yes. Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, and Google rolled it out to all websites on 31 August 2026. Traffic from AI features is also counted in the Performance report, under the Web search type.
