How to Rank in ChatGPT: Getting Your Brand Named and Cited

How ChatGPT chooses the sources it cites, the technical checks that make a site eligible, the content and third-party mentions that help, and how to measure progress.

To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI’s search crawler reach your site, publish pages that answer your buyers’ questions in their first lines, and earn accurate mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT searches, then measure the same prompts over time.

“Ranking” in ChatGPT means two things: being named in the answer, and being one of the sources it links. Both depend on what ChatGPT finds when it searches the web. This guide covers how that search works, the checks that make a site eligible, the content and mentions that help, and how to tell whether any of it is working. For the same work across every engine, read how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude.

How does ChatGPT pick its sources?

ChatGPT answers some questions from what its model learned in training and others by searching the web. OpenAI says ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information, and people can also choose Search themselves. (source)

When it searches, ChatGPT usually rewrites the question into one or more shorter queries and sends them to search partners. OpenAI’s own example turns a long question about cancer drugs into the query “CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025”, then sends narrower follow-up queries after reading the first results. The privacy statements OpenAI links for those partners are Microsoft’s and Shopify’s. (source)

Two things follow for a brand. First, your pages compete for the rewritten query, not for the person’s full question, so pages that match short, specific queries (a product category, a comparison, a named problem) have more chances to be found. Second, OpenAI says ChatGPT “ranks search results using multiple factors” aimed at relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. (source) Nobody outside OpenAI knows the factors, so treat any promise of a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking as a guess.

We cover how engines choose which passage to quote in how AI engines choose citations.

Technical checklist: can ChatGPT read your site?

OpenAI documents one requirement for appearing in ChatGPT search: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl the site, and make sure your host or content delivery network lets through traffic from OpenAI’s published search bot IP addresses. (source) Work through these checks in order.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. It is the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect. (source)
  2. Check your CDN and firewall. A bot-management rule can block OpenAI before robots.txt is read, and the block does not show in the robots.txt file. Allow the IP ranges OpenAI publishes for each bot rather than every request that claims the name.
  3. Decide on GPTBot separately. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. Blocking it opts out of training and does not remove a site from ChatGPT search. (source)
  4. Expect ChatGPT-User. It visits a page when a person asks ChatGPT about it. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it, because a user started the visit. (source)
  5. Serve your text in the HTML. If the words only appear after JavaScript runs, a crawler that does not run it sees an empty page. Check with view-source, not the browser’s element inspector.
  6. Publish llms.txt if you like. OpenAI does not say ChatGPT reads it, but it costs little and gives any AI reader a clean map of your site. Our llms.txt guide shows what to put in it.

The free AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt for every OpenAI bot and tells you which ones it blocks, and whether a block costs you answers or only keeps you out of training data.

What content gets cited in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT quotes passages it can lift cleanly into an answer. OpenAI does not publish a list of formats, so the guidance below is about making a page easy to use, not a formula.

  • Answer first. Put a one-sentence answer to the page’s question in its opening lines, then the detail. A passage that needs the rest of the page to make sense is hard to quote.
  • Headings that are questions. “How much does X cost?” matches the way people ask ChatGPT and the short queries it sends to search partners.
  • Tables for comparisons. Prices, features and plans in a table can be read row by row without guessing which number belongs to which product.
  • Dates and sources. Say when a fact was checked and link where it came from. OpenAI tells ChatGPT users to check when a cited source was published or updated, and readers who click through will do the same. (source)
  • One page per question that matters. A buyer asking “best X for Y” is better served by a page about X for Y than by a general product page.

Earned mentions and Reddit

ChatGPT searches the open web, so what other sites say about you can matter as much as what you say about yourself. Review sites, comparison articles, industry publications and community threads are the places a rewritten query is likely to land.

Reddit has a direct relationship with ChatGPT. In May 2024 OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership under which OpenAI accesses Reddit’s Data API to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT, “especially on recent topics”. (source) That does not mean every Reddit thread is cited, but it does mean honest, useful participation in the communities your buyers read is worth the time. Answer questions in your field, say who you work for, and never post fake reviews: moderators remove them and they damage the brand you are trying to build.

If ChatGPT describes your brand wrongly, the error usually starts on a page it found. When AI gets your brand wrong covers how to trace it and correct it at the source.

How to measure your ChatGPT ranking

ChatGPT answers vary from one run to the next, so one question asked once tells you little. Measure the same way every time.

  1. Fix a list of prompts. Write the questions your buyers ask, in their words. Which prompts to track explains how to choose them, and the free AI prompt finder suggests the questions buyers ask about your category.
  2. Run them on a schedule. Record whether your brand is named, where it appears in the answer, how it is described, and which sources are cited.
  3. Track competitors too. Your share of the brands named matters more than a single mention. AI share of voice explains the measure.
  4. Watch the crawler and the visits. Server logs show whether OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are fetching your pages, and your analytics show visits that arrive from chatgpt.com.

Noma by Nurdd does this every day. Its ChatGPT visibility tracker runs your prompts in ChatGPT, records mentions, position, sentiment and cited sources, and compares you with competitors, and its Agent Analytics reports which OpenAI crawlers read each page. Questions people ask

How do you rank in ChatGPT?

Make your site eligible by allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, publish pages that answer buyer questions directly in their first lines, earn accurate mentions on the third-party sites ChatGPT searches, and measure a fixed set of prompts over time. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

Does blocking GPTBot remove a site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI runs separate crawlers. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models, while OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot only opts out of training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers.

How long does a robots.txt change take to reach ChatGPT?

OpenAI says changes to OAI-SearchBot rules can take about 24 hours to take effect. Being crawled again does not guarantee a citation, so measure your prompts for some weeks after the change.

Does ChatGPT use llms.txt?

OpenAI does not say that ChatGPT reads llms.txt. The file is cheap to publish and gives any reader a clean summary of your site, but the documented requirement for ChatGPT search is that OAI-SearchBot can crawl your pages.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI describes ChatGPT search results as ranked by multiple factors intended to find relevant, reliable information, and says placement is not guaranteed. It publishes no way to pay for a place among the sources an answer cites.
