AI Visibility Checker for Brand Mentions: What Reddit Misses

How to choose an AI visibility checker for brand mentions and citations: a test-before-you-buy checklist covering engines, prompts, repeat runs and URLs.

The best AI visibility checker for brand mentions and citations is the one that passes four tests on your own brand: it covers the engines your buyers use, runs a fixed prompt set you control, repeats every prompt, and records the cited URL behind each answer. Features and dashboards matter less than those four behaviours.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit threads ask for a tool name. The better question is which workflow you can trust, because mentions and citations are two different measurements.
  • Test any checker with 20 unbranded buyer prompts before paying. Compare its output with your own manual runs.
  • Require repeat runs. Ahrefs, October 2026, found that 50 to 83% of tracked citations were gone the next day, and about 75% of those returned within 20 days.
  • Demand the cited URL, not only a mention count. Without it you cannot tell which page to fix.
  • Check engine coverage against where your buyers search, and note which engines are add-ons rather than included.
  • Report mentions as the headline metric and citations as the diagnostic. Ahrefs suggests mentions are the steadier KPI.

What are marketers on Reddit actually asking?

A recent r/DigitalMarketing thread asks for the best AI visibility checker for monitoring a brand's mentions and citations online. The pain is finding a tracker, and the usual replies are a list of vendor names.

A name does not answer the question, because the buyer has not said what they need to monitor. Three jobs hide inside that one post:

  • Mention monitoring: is my brand named in the answer to a buyer's question, and how is it described?
  • Citation monitoring: which of my URLs, or someone else's, does the engine list as a source?
  • Online mention monitoring: the older job of finding brand mentions across news, forums and social media, which is a separate tool category from AI answers.

Most community advice blends these. A social listening tool will not tell you what ChatGPT says about you. An AI visibility checker will not find a forum post that criticises you, unless that post becomes a source an engine cites. Decide which job you are buying for. This guide covers the AI answer side, and shows where the web-mention side connects to it.

How do I monitor my brand mentions across AI engines?

You run the questions your buyers ask on each engine, on a schedule, from clean sessions, and record two things per answer: whether your brand is named, and which URLs are cited. A tool automates this. The method is the same either way.

  1. Write 20 unbranded prompts. Use buyer language such as "best [category] for [use case]", not your brand name. Branded prompts only test whether an engine knows you exist. The free AI Prompt Finder shows the questions buyers ask about a category, tagged by intent.
  2. Fix the set. Do not edit the wording week to week. A changed prompt is a changed experiment. Which prompts to track covers how to build a set that lasts.
  3. Pick the engines. At minimum ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, plus Google AI Overviews or AI Mode if your category is search-led.
  4. Run each prompt several times. Three runs per prompt per engine is a workable floor for a manual baseline.
  5. Log each answer. Record date, engine, prompt, run number, brand named (yes or no), position in any list, competitors named and every cited URL.
  6. Calculate rates. Mention rate is answers naming you divided by answers collected. State the numerator and denominator every time.

The manual steps are written out with a log template in How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT: manual and tool methods. For a quick first read without any setup, the free brand audit shows how AI engines describe a brand.

Why does one check mislead? The repeat-run evidence

Citations are volatile by design. Ahrefs tracked about 37,500 citations across five AI tools every day for 20 days. At least half had disappeared by the next day: around 60% on Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, 50% on AI Overviews, and 80% on Gemini and Copilot, according to Ahrefs, October 2026.

The same study found that most come back. About 75% of the dropped citations returned within 20 days, and a citation that held for eight or more days almost always returned (96 to 99%). A one-day citation failed to return 34 to 41% of the time.

"Don't judge AI visibility from one check." (Ahrefs, October 2026)

What this means for a checker test: a tool that reports a single snapshot per prompt, or an average with no run count, hides most of the variance. Ask the vendor how many runs sit behind each number. AI citation stability explains how to separate noise from change.

A worked example of the sample size

Take the 20-prompt set, three runs each, across four engines. That is 20 x 3 x 4 = 240 answers per round. Suppose 36 of them name your brand. Your mention rate is 36 / 240 = 15%. Run the same set a week later and get 42 of 240, or 17.5%. That gap is 6 answers. Given how much single answers move, treat it as noise until it repeats. Only a sustained shift across several rounds, or a gap that appears on one engine and holds, is a finding. The numbers here are illustrative arithmetic, not a benchmark.

Mentions or citations: which should the checker report?

Both, kept separate. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. A citation is your URL listed as a source. The Ahrefs study gives a reason to keep them apart: brand mentions can remain in answers after website citations disappear. Ahrefs notes that citations may be a weak KPI and mentions a stronger candidate because they are more stable.

MetricWhat it tells youHow stableUse it for
Mention rateWhether buyers see your nameMore stable per AhrefsHeadline KPI
Citation rateWhether your pages are used as evidenceVolatile day to dayDiagnosis, fix list
Cited domainsWhich third-party sites shape answersModeratePR and earned media targets

Sentiment and wordingHow the engine describes youDepends on sourcesAccuracy and reputation checks

More on the distinction is in citation vs brand mention. If a tool shows only a citation count or only a vague "visibility score" with no definition, it fails the first test below.

The test-before-you-buy checklist for an AI visibility checker

Run this with any vendor's free trial or demo. It takes an afternoon and costs nothing if you cancel in time. Score each row pass or fail.

TestHow to run itPass condition
1. Engine coverageList the engines your buyers use. Compare with the vendor's pricing page.Every engine you need is tracked, and you know which are add-ons.
2. Prompt controlEnter your own 20 prompts, not the vendor's suggestions. You can set, freeze and tag prompts by funnel stage.
3. Repeat runsAsk how many runs sit behind each number and how often they run.Multiple runs per prompt, daily or similar cadence, run count visible.
4. Citation URLsOpen five answers. Find the source list. Each answer shows the full cited URL, not only the domain.
5. Answer textPick one prompt and compare the tool's stored answer with your manual run.The raw answer is viewable and broadly matches yours.
6. Competitor viewAdd three rivals.Share of voice and competitor citations are shown per engine.
7. ExportTry a CSV or API pull. You can take the answers and sources out.

Tests 3 and 5 are the ones most buyers skip, and they catch the most. If the tool's stored answer for a prompt looks nothing like what you see manually, find out why before trusting its trend line. Differences in location, account state and session history are common causes, which is why clean sessions matter.

Check engine disagreement, not just coverage

Engines do not agree, so an average across them hides the useful detail. PPC Land, November 2026, reporting on Bluefish research, says ChatGPT and Google put a different brand at the top in 35% of 5,810 buying topics across three categories. A checker that reports one blended number would bury that split. Insist on per-engine results. See why engines disagree about your brand for the causes.

What do Reddit answers usually miss?

Community recommendations tend to skip five things. Each is a question to put to any vendor, including us.

  • Crawl access. A checker tells you where you are absent. It cannot tell you that your robots.txt or CDN is blocking the bot. OpenAI's documentation says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI, as checked 5 November 2026). Test your access with the free AI Crawler Checker.
  • Referral traffic. Visibility is not visits. Google states that clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the overall Search Console Performance report, per Google Search Central, so they are not isolated there. Pair a checker with analytics. Measuring AI traffic covers GA4 rules.
  • Description accuracy. A mention that states the wrong price or the wrong category is a liability, not a win. Sample the wording.
  • Source ownership. Knowing a citation exists matters less than knowing whether it sits on your site or on someone else's. The fix differs.
  • Google rank relationship. Ahrefs found pages that rank in Google and get search traffic kept citations longer. Compare organic rank with AI presence using the free Google Rank vs AI Mode Checker.

Where does Noma fit?

Noma by Nurdd is an answer engine optimisation platform that asks 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, the questions your buyers ask, every day. It reports whether your brand is named, how high, and with what sentiment, compares you with competitors, and lists the pages each answer cites. Every paid plan includes ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and the other engines are add-ons.

See it on your own brand: book a demo or start the 3-day free trial. A card is taken at signup so billing can start on day 3, and nothing is charged if you cancel before then. Plans start at $79 a month, listed on the pricing page.

A one-afternoon trial plan

Use the 3-day window deliberately, whichever tool you test.

  1. Before signup: run your 20 prompts by hand on ChatGPT and one other engine, three runs each, and save the logs.
  2. Day 1: load the same prompts into the tool. Compare its stored answers to your logs for five prompts.
  3. Day 2: check whether run counts, citation URLs and competitor views match the checklist above.
  4. Day 3: decide on evidence. If it fails tests 3, 4 or 5, cancel before billing starts.

For agencies or teams tracking several brands, check project limits too; the AEO tools buyer's checklist covers seats, projects and reporting.

Common mistakes when picking a checker

  • Choosing by the vendor's demo brand rather than your own category and prompts.
  • Tracking only branded prompts, which flatters the result.
  • Reading one day's drop as a crisis. Ahrefs found most dropped citations return.
  • Counting a domain citation as a page citation. Confirm the URL.
  • Treating a visibility score as a metric without its formula. Ask for numerator and denominator.
  • Ignoring that some engines are paid add-ons, so the quoted price covers fewer engines than the headline.

How we researched this

We reviewed platform documentation from OpenAI and Google Search Central, a published citation-stability study from Ahrefs, trade press reporting on Bluefish's research, and the Reddit thread that prompted the question. Facts, figures and prices were checked on 2026-11-05. Noma claims come from Noma's own published pages. We have not run a head-to-head test of rival tools, and the worked example above is arithmetic, not measured data.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI visibility checker for monitoring brand mentions and citations?

The best one is the tool that passes your own test. It should cover the engines your buyers use, accept a fixed set of your prompts, run each prompt several times and show the full cited URL. Test two or three tools on the same 20 prompts and compare them with a manual run.

How do I monitor my brand mentions online across AI engines?

Write 20 unbranded buyer questions, run them on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on a schedule, and log whether your brand is named and which URLs are cited. Repeat each prompt several times. A tracker such as Noma automates this across 13 AI engines.

Why do my brand mentions change between checks?

AI answers vary from run to run. Ahrefs tracked about 37,500 citations for 20 days and found 50 to 83% were gone the next day, though about 75% returned within 20 days. Judge a change over several days and runs, not one check.

Is a brand mention the same as a citation in AI answers?

No. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. A citation is your URL listed as a source. Ahrefs reports that mentions can stay in answers after citations disappear, so track the two separately.

Can a free tool check my AI visibility?

Yes, for a first read. Noma's free brand audit shows how AI engines describe a brand. It gives a snapshot, so for trends you need repeat runs on a fixed prompt set, by hand or with a tracker.

Does Google Search Console show my AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic?

Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall search traffic in the Search Console Performance report. They are not isolated as a separate traffic source there, so pair it with a prompt-level tracker and analytics referrals.
