AI Mode Links Only Google Flights: What Brands Should Do

Google AI Mode links Google Flights only in a reported test. See how Google-owned units crowd out citations, and a checklist to test your own category.

Google AI Mode links Google Flights and no one else for flight queries, according to a test published on 3 November 2026. That is one vertical, one tester and one weekend, not proof that AI Mode only links to Google products. It is a signal for travel and marketplace brands to test their own category before assuming a citation slot exists for them.

Key takeaways

  • The report covers flight queries only. It does not show AI Mode behaves this way for hotels, retail or software.
  • Google-owned units (Flights, Hotels, Shopping, Maps) can take the link slots, so being the best third-party page may earn no link at all.
  • Test your category: 10 to 20 buyer prompts, 3 runs each, and tag every link as Google-owned, partner or third party.
  • Where Google owns the link, the goal shifts from citation to being the named supplier, partner or merchant inside the answer.
  • Track the result daily across engines, because ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude may cite differently for the same prompts.

What did the Google AI Mode Google Flights test find?

Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable tested AI Mode for flight information over a weekend and reported that, in his words, Search Engine Roundtable, November 2026 found "100% of the time, the only links available within the AI Mode responses were to Google Flights." He tried several destinations, both US domestic and international, and says he has dozens of screenshots.

The SEO Natzir (@natzir9) posted the same observation on X on 30 October 2026, per the same article. Two people seeing it is a pattern worth checking, but it is not a controlled study. Neither the destinations, the number of runs nor the account settings are published as a method. I did not find a Google statement on the behaviour in the sources reviewed.

Does Google AI Mode only link to Google products?

No, the evidence does not say that. The reported test is limited to flights. For other topics AI Mode still draws on third-party pages, and Google's own documentation on Google Search Central, AI features and your website describes AI Mode and AI Overviews as features that surface links to web content.

What the test does show is a mechanism. When Google runs a product that answers the query itself, such as Flights, the answer can point to that product and leave no link for a publisher or an online travel agency. Other reports suggest Google properties are a large share of AI Mode citations generally. Digital Applied, 2026 attributes to Profound an analysis of 32M+ AI Mode citation instances in which google.com is the second most-cited domain, and an ALM Corp headline reports Google citing itself in 17% of answers across 1.3 million citations. I have not verified either method, so treat them as directional.

Why Google-owned units can crowd out third-party citations

Three things make the Flights result plausible and relevant beyond flights.

  • Structured inventory. Flights has live prices. An answer that shows fares needs a source of fares, and Google has its own.
  • Partner model. Google said Flights in AI Mode lists prices from "more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites", per 9to5Google, August 2026. Brands inside that feed appear in the data without necessarily getting a link of their own.
  • Booking handoff. The same report says users can buy through the airline's website or a preferred booking platform, so the click goes to the supplier at the last step, not to an article.

Hotels follow a similar path. Hotel Dive, 2026 lists IHG Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International among hotel launch partners, and Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com among travel-site partners for AI Mode hotel booking.

Why regulators may care

On 23 July 2026 the European Commission fined Google a combined €890 million under the Digital Markets Act, including €460 million for self-preferencing its own vertical services such as Shopping, Hotels and Transport, per the European Publishers Council, July 2026. The EPC statement also pushes for the non-discrimination principle to apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Schwartz's article itself notes DMA enforcers may take an interest. Whether any action follows is unknown, so do not plan around a fix.

Which verticals are exposed? A decision table

This is a working framework, not published data. Score each category by whether Google runs a structured unit that can answer the query.

Rows other than flights are hypotheses to test, not findings. Use the method for finding competitors in Google AI Overviews as a starting point.

How do I get my site cited in Google AI Mode when Google shows its own results?

Work in this order. Each step is something you can check.

  1. Confirm the problem exists for you. Run your 10 to 20 buyer prompts in AI Mode, three times each, logged out. Record every link and tag it Google-owned, partner or third party. If third-party links appear, you have a citation game. If none do, you have an inclusion game.
  2. Check eligibility basics. Google's AI features documentation is the reference for what pages need to be indexed and snippet-eligible. Run the free AI SEO Checker and the free AI Crawler Checker for blocked bots.
  3. Get into the feed. Where Google runs a unit, supply the data it reads: Merchant Center for products, Business Profile for local, hotel and airline partner programmes for travel. Eligibility rules differ and independent hotels were reported to be missing from the first AI Mode booking partners, per Hotel Online, 2026.
  4. Win the non-unit prompts. Prompts about advice, comparisons, rules and "is it worth it" are not answered by a fare table. Publish dated, answer-first pages there. See how to optimise content for AI Mode.
  5. Earn the off-Google mentions. Other engines read review sites, communities and press. The earned media playbook covers how to find the outlets engines already cite.

A test you can run in an afternoon

Take 10 prompts and run each three times, giving 30 answers. Count answers where at least one third-party link appears, and answers where only Google-owned links appear. Illustration only: if all 30 answers carried only Google Flights links, your third-party link share is 0 of 30, which matches the reported pattern. If 12 of 30 carry a third-party link, share is 40%. Repeat the same prompts next week, since answers vary between runs, as covered in AI citation stability.

For a quick comparison of where you rank in Google versus what AI Mode cites, use the free Google Rank vs AI Mode Checker. It shows your organic position next to the sources Google's AI features cite for the same query.

What to check this week

  • Run the 30-answer test on your top travel, marketplace or product prompts.
  • List which Google-owned units appear and whether you are a partner in each.
  • Check Search Console traffic from Google for the affected queries, and annotate 30 October 2026 as the report date.
  • Record whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name you for the same prompts, since a missing Google link says nothing about them.
  • Do not change pages on the strength of one report. Change them on your own baseline.

How to measure it across 13 AI engines

Noma by Nurdd asks 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, the questions your buyers ask, every day. For this problem it shows per engine whether your brand is named, where competitors are named instead, and which pages the answers cite. Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews are among those 13 engines, so you can compare a Google answer with a ChatGPT answer on the same fixed prompt set.

How we researched this

We reviewed the Search Engine Roundtable report, Google's Search Central documentation, trade coverage of AI Mode travel features (9to5Google, Hotel Dive, Hotel Online), a European Publishers Council statement on the Commission's decision, and two third-party citation studies whose methods we could not verify. Facts, dates and figures were checked on 2026-11-04. We did not run our own AI Mode test, so the Flights finding is the reporter's.

What to do next

Run the afternoon test, split your prompts into Google-owned and open ones, and track both daily so you can tell a real change from noise. To see your own category across engines, book a demo or start the free trial.

Questions people ask

Does Google AI Mode only link to Google products?

No. The reported test covered flight queries only, where every link pointed to Google Flights. For other topics AI Mode still links to web pages, so test your own category rather than assume either outcome.

Why does Google AI Mode link only to Google Flights?

Google has not explained it in the sources we reviewed. A likely reason is that Flights holds live fare data from more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites, so the answer can point to that unit directly.

How do I get my site cited in Google AI Mode when Google shows its own results?

First test whether third-party links appear for your prompts. Then supply the data Google's unit reads (Merchant Center, Business Profile or partner programmes) and publish answer-first pages for prompts the unit cannot answer, such as comparisons and advice.

Is the Google AI Mode Flights test proof of bias?

No. It is one reporter's weekend test, corroborated by one post on X, with no published method. It is enough to justify checking your own category, not to draw conclusions about every vertical.

Can regulators act on Google AI Mode self-preferencing?

The European Commission fined Google €890 million in July 2026 under the Digital Markets Act, including €460 million for self-preferencing vertical services. Publishers have asked for the same principle to apply to AI Mode, but no action on AI Mode flights is reported.

How do I measure whether AI Mode crowds out my brand?

Run a fixed set of 10 to 20 buyer prompts three times each, tag every link as Google-owned, partner or third party, and compute the third-party share. Repeat weekly and compare with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on the same prompts.
