To improve visibility in Perplexity, work in four steps: let PerplexityBot crawl your pages, make each key page open with a direct answer, earn mentions on the third-party pages Perplexity already cites for your buyers' questions, and track the same prompts every week. Measure citations, brand mentions and position in the answer as three separate numbers.
Key takeaways
- Perplexity shows its sources next to every answer, so a page that is not crawlable cannot be cited. Check access first, before you rewrite anything.
- PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User are different agents with different robots.txt behaviour. Treat them as two decisions.
- Write the answer in the first one or two sentences under each question-style heading, then add the evidence.
- Look at which pages Perplexity cites for your prompts. Your own site is often a minority of them, so earned coverage matters.
- Track a fixed prompt set weekly and state a margin of error. A few points of movement on 20 prompts is usually noise.
- Citations (your URL is listed) and mentions (your brand is named) are different outcomes. Report both, plus position.
How does Perplexity decide who to cite?
Perplexity answers a question by searching the web and then writing a response with numbered source links. That design has a practical consequence: the answer is only as good as the pages it retrieves, so your visibility depends on being retrieved, read and judged quotable, in that order.
Reported figures show how source-heavy it is. One 2026 source index puts the average at 8.2 cited sources per Perplexity answer, 3.4 times ChatGPT (Everything PR, checked October 2026). More slots per answer means more room for a page that is not the market leader, but also more competitors in the same answer.
The same index reports Reddit at 20 to 24 per cent of Perplexity citations and attributes 31 per cent of citations to social media to Tinuiti's January 2026 data. Another tracker reports that reddit.com was cited in 1,511 of 6,847 Perplexity answer runs, 22.1 per cent, in its 21 October 2026 release (AuthorityTech, October 2026). These are vendor-run samples with their own prompt sets, so use them as direction, not as a rule for your category. The test that matters is your own prompts, which step 3 covers.

What is the plan to improve visibility in Perplexity?
The plan has four stages. Each one depends on the one before it, which is why the order matters.
| Step | Question it answers | Output | Time to first signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Crawl access | Can Perplexity read the page at all? | Fixed robots.txt and CDN rules | Same day |
| 2. Answer-first pages | Is the page easy to quote? | Rewritten key pages | Next crawl, usually days to weeks |
| 3. Cited sources | Which pages does Perplexity use for my prompts? | A ranked list of outlets to earn coverage on | Weeks to months |
| 4. Weekly tracking | Did anything move? | Citation, mention and position trend with a margin of error | Four to six weekly runs |
The time column is our planning estimate, not a published figure. Source coverage in particular depends on how quickly third parties publish.
Step 1: How do I check that Perplexity can crawl my site?
Start here because it is the cheapest fix and the one most often skipped. Perplexity uses two agents. PerplexityBot crawls pages for Perplexity search results, while Perplexity-User fetches pages for live user actions (Promptwatch, as checked October 2026).
They behave differently. PerplexityBot follows robots.txt, and 51Degrees reports it is not used to crawl content to train AI foundation models (51Degrees, as checked October 2026). Perplexity-User is user-initiated: Promptwatch reports that Perplexity says this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt (Promptwatch, as checked October 2026). So a robots.txt Disallow does not reliably stop Perplexity-User. Enforcement, if you want it, sits at your firewall or CDN.
Checklist: crawl access in ten minutes
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and search for PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User and a blanket User-agent: * with Disallow: /. A blanket block catches PerplexityBot even if you never named it.
- Run the Free AI Crawler Checker. It tests whether PerplexityBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google AI can crawl your site and generates a corrected robots.txt.
- Check your CDN or web application firewall. Bot-protection rules often return a 403 to unfamiliar user agents even when robots.txt allows them. Ask your web team for a log search of PerplexityBot requests and their status codes.
- If you want to allow it explicitly, add a group like the one below.
- Confirm the pages that matter return the text in the initial HTML. If the answer only appears after JavaScript runs, a crawler may see an empty shell.
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Verify agents by IP, not just by name. A source tracking the agent notes that Perplexity publishes IP ranges for Perplexity-User in a JSON file, and robots.txt is a request that a client can ignore (Centinel Analytica, as checked October 2026). Our AI Crawler Policy Kit covers the wider decision on training bots versus search bots.
Then run the Free AI SEO Checker. It runs 30-plus checks on whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI can read your site and lists the top fixes, with no signup.
Step 2: How do I make pages easy for Perplexity to quote?
Perplexity quotes passages, not pages. A passage works when it can be lifted out and still make sense. Rewrite your ten most important pages with these rules.
- Answer first. Under each question-style heading, put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, in 40 to 60 words. Evidence and nuance follow.
- Name the entity in full. Write "Acme Billing prices plans from $29 a month", not "it starts at $29". A passage with a pronoun loses its subject when quoted.
- Put facts in tables. Pricing, limits, integrations and comparisons are easier to extract from a table than from prose.
- Date the facts. Add "as checked on" dates to prices and specifications so a stale page is recognisably stale.
- Add structured data that matches the visible page. Use the Free Schema Markup Generator and Validator for Organization, Product, FAQ and Article markup.
Page type may matter too. One vendor analysis of its tracked Perplexity citations found blog and article content held 22.8 per cent of citations, while review and comparison pages had the best average citation position, 3.1 (Omnia, checked October 2026). That is one vendor's dataset, so check it against yours. The practical reading: if buyers ask comparison questions, a fair, specific comparison page on your own site is a candidate to be cited near the top.
To see how quotable a draft is before you publish, paste it into the Free Content AI-Readiness Grader. It shows which passages an AI could quote and where the weak spots are.
A before and after
| Weak opening | Answer-first opening |
|---|---|
| "Choosing a payroll tool is a big decision, and there are many factors to consider before you commit." | "Payroll software for a team of 20 should handle tax filing, direct deposit and year-end forms. Compare tax coverage first, then price per employee, then integrations." |
The second version can be quoted alone. The first cannot.
Step 3: How do I earn the sources Perplexity already cites?
Your own site is only part of the answer set. For many buying questions, Perplexity cites review sites, publications, forums and video pages. If those pages describe your competitors and not you, rewriting your homepage will not fix it.
How to find the pages that matter
- Pick 20 unbranded buyer questions, such as "best project management tool for agencies". The Free AI Prompt Finder suggests questions buyers ask in your category, tagged by intent.
- Ask each in Perplexity and copy every cited URL into a sheet, with the date.
- Group the URLs by domain and by type: your site, competitor sites, review sites, news, forums, video.
- Rank domains by how many prompts they appear in. The top five are your target list.
- For each, decide the route: correct an existing listing, contribute data, pitch a story, or take part openly in a community within its rules.
Earned coverage works best when the key sentence names your brand, the claim and the category together. The Earned Media for AI Answers guide walks through the pitch format.
What to do when the cited pages are forums
If Reddit or similar communities dominate your list, the work is participation, not placement. Answer questions openly under your own identity, disclose your connection, and follow each community's rules. Avoid sock puppets and link drops: they break the rules and risk your reputation. Measure results as citations gained, not posts made.
Step 4: How do I track Perplexity visibility weekly?
Tracking turns the first three steps from opinions into evidence. The method is simple, and the discipline is in keeping it the same each week.
- Fix a prompt set of 20 to 30 unbranded buyer questions and write it down with a version number. Do not edit prompts mid-test. See which prompts to track for how to choose them.
- Run each prompt several times on the same day each week, because answers vary between runs.
- Record for every answer: was the brand named, was a brand URL cited, at what position, which sources appeared, and the words used about the brand.
- Calculate the rates with the numerator and denominator written beside each.
- Compare against the baseline, not against last week alone.
You can do this by hand in a spreadsheet. Our guide to monitoring how often your website shows up in AI chatbot answers covers three ways to run it.
What metrics show Perplexity visibility?
Five measures cover it. Keep them separate, because they move for different reasons.
| Metric | Definition | Numerator / denominator | What a change usually means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citation rate | How often one of your URLs appears in the source list | Answers citing your domain / total answers | Your pages are being retrieved and judged useful |
| Mention rate | How often your brand is named in the answer text | Answers naming the brand / total answers | Engines associate you with the category |
| Position in answer | Where the brand appears in a list or recommendation | Average rank when named | How strongly you are recommended |
| Share of voice | Your mentions against named competitors | Your mentions / all tracked-brand mentions | Whether you are gaining or losing ground against rivals |
| Source mix | Which domains are cited for your prompts | Citations per domain / total citations | Where to earn coverage next |
Citations and mentions diverge often. A page can be cited as a source while the answer text recommends a competitor, and a brand can be named with no link to its site. Our post on citation versus brand mention explains why each needs different work. For the formula behind the share row, see what AI share of voice is.
Referral visits from Perplexity in your analytics are a sixth, lagging signal. They confirm an effect after the fact but undercount influence, since many readers see the answer and never click.
How to read a symptom
| What you see | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No citations, no mentions | Crawl block, or no relevant page | Step 1, then publish an answer-first page |
| Cited, but a competitor is named in the text | Your page is a source, but third parties favour the rival | Check what the page says about you, then earn independent mentions |
| Named, but never cited | Engines know you from other sites, and your own pages are not quotable | Rewrite key pages answer-first and add dated facts |
| Named, but low position | Weak or inconsistent descriptions across sources | Align your positioning sentence on your site and review profiles |
| Cited sources are mostly forums | Buyers' questions are answered by community discussion | Take part openly, and publish pages that answer the same questions |
How much change on a weekly check is real?
Most teams over-read small movements. Here is a worked example using simple arithmetic. It is our own illustration, not a published result.
Suppose you track 20 prompts and run each 5 times a week, giving 100 answers. In week 1 the brand is named in 24 of them (24 per cent). In week 4 it is named in 33 (33 per cent). That looks like a nine-point gain.
The standard error of each rate is roughly the square root of p times (1 minus p) divided by n. For week 1 that is about 4.3 points, for week 4 about 4.7 points. The standard error of the difference is about 6.4 points, so a 95 per cent interval is roughly plus or minus 12.5 points. Nine points sits inside it. The honest reading is "possibly up, not confirmed".
Runs of the same prompt are not fully independent, so the true uncertainty is, if anything, wider. Three habits help: use more runs, wait for a sustained trend over several weeks, and do not change the prompt set midway. The AI Visibility Measurement Standard sets out the same rules in full: version the prompts, state each figure's numerator and denominator, and call a change only when it exceeds the margin.
Common mistakes when trying to improve visibility in Perplexity
- Blocking crawlers site-wide and forgetting. A bot-protection rule added for a scraping problem can silently block PerplexityBot for months.
- Tracking branded prompts only. "What is Acme?" tells you little. Buyers ask category questions where you are not named yet.
- Treating one run as the answer. One screenshot is an anecdote. A rate over many runs is a measurement.
- Optimising only your own site. If the cited pages are third-party, you need third-party coverage.
- Changing five things in one week. You will not know which one moved the number. Ship changes in batches and log the dates.
- Expecting rankings. Perplexity composes answers. There is no stable position 1 to hold, only rates across many runs.
Where does Noma fit?
Noma by Nurdd is an AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI visibility platform. For Perplexity it runs your buyer prompts every day across 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and reports mentions, citations, position and sentiment per engine. It lists the sources each answer cites and which competitors are named instead, so the weekly check in step 4 does not depend on a spreadsheet. See the Perplexity visibility tracker for details.
See it on your own brand: book a demo or start the 3-day free trial. A card is taken at signup so billing can start on day 3; cancel before then and nothing is charged. Plans and prices are on the pricing page.
How we researched this
We reviewed vendor documentation summaries of Perplexity's crawlers, published citation-source indexes from AEO vendors, and the existing guides from Semrush, Omnia and Goodie on Perplexity optimisation to find what they leave out: a crawl-access checklist that separates PerplexityBot from Perplexity-User, a symptom table, and a worked margin-of-error example. Statistics come from vendor-run samples with different prompt sets, so we flag them as directional. Facts, figures and product details were checked on 2026-10-30. We have not run our own Perplexity experiment for this post.
What to do next
This week: run the crawler checker, fix any block, and rewrite your three most important pages answer-first. Next week: collect Perplexity's cited sources for 20 buyer prompts and pick five outlets to approach. Then track the same prompts weekly for at least a month before judging.
If you would rather have the tracking run for you, book a demo or start the free trial.
Questions people ask
How do I get my brand cited in Perplexity?
Make sure PerplexityBot can crawl your pages, then publish answer-first pages that state facts in standalone sentences and tables. Check which third-party pages Perplexity cites for your buyers' questions and earn accurate coverage there. Track the same prompts weekly to confirm your URLs start appearing in the source list.
How can I improve my visibility in Perplexity?
Work in four steps: fix crawl access, rewrite key pages so each opens with a direct answer, earn mentions on the sources Perplexity already cites, and measure weekly on a fixed prompt set. Change one batch of things at a time and log the dates so you can tell what moved the numbers.
What metrics show Perplexity visibility?
Track citation rate (answers citing your domain), mention rate (answers naming your brand), position in the answer, share of voice against competitors and source mix. State the numerator and denominator for each, and add a margin of error. Referral visits are a useful lagging signal but undercount influence.
Should I block Perplexity-User in robots.txt?
Blocking it will not reliably work, because Promptwatch reports that Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt. If you need to restrict it, enforce the rule at your firewall or CDN using the IP ranges Perplexity publishes. Blocking it would also stop Perplexity reading your page when a user asks about it.
How long does it take to see a change in Perplexity?
Crawl fixes can matter within days once a page is re-fetched, while earned coverage on third-party sites usually takes weeks to months. Plan on four to six weekly runs of the same prompts before judging, because single-week changes are often inside the margin of error.
Is Perplexity visibility the same as ranking in Google?
No. Perplexity composes an answer from several sources and cites them, so there is no single ranked list to hold. A page can rank well in Google and still not be named or cited in Perplexity, so measure both separately.
