Organization
How this helps AI engines: Tells engines your official name, logo, website and profiles, so they can connect mentions of you across the web to one entity.

Add it to your site
- Put the object in the page component that renders this page, not in a shared layout, unless it describes the whole site (Organization, for example).
- Render it in a script tag: <script type="application/ld+json" dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: JSON.stringify(jsonLd).replace(/</g, "\\u003c") }} />. The replace stops a stray "<" in your data from breaking out of the tag.
- Deploy, then view the page source and check the script is in the HTML the server sends.

Schema done. Now check whether AI engines actually mention you.

What schema markup is
Schema markup is a block of structured data, usually JSON-LD inside a script tag, that states facts about a page in a vocabulary machines share: schema.org. Instead of inferring from your copy that you are a dental practice in Seattle open until six, a crawler reads it directly: type Dentist, this address, these hours.
Which types matter most for AI understanding
Start with Organization. It names your official brand, website, logo and social profiles, which is how a mention of you on another site gets connected to the same entity. A local business should use LocalBusiness, or a subtype such as Dentist or Restaurant, with a full address and opening hours. After that, mark up each page as what it is: Product with real prices, Article with a named author and dates, BreadcrumbList for where it sits in your site.
Rich results are not the same as understanding
Google decides separately whether to show a rich result, and it has been showing fewer of them: HowTo rich results went in September 2023 and FAQ rich results in May 2026. Valid markup still describes your content to every system that reads it. Structured data is one signal among many. It helps engines understand your entity and content; it does not guarantee rankings, rich results or AI citations, and anyone who promises otherwise is guessing.
Markup also has to match the page. Google asks that structured data describe content visitors can see, so never add ratings, reviews or prices that are not on the page, and never invent them.
How to validate
Use the Validate tab on any public page. It fetches the HTML the server sends, finds every JSON-LD block, and checks each item: valid JSON with the line where a broken block fails, a schema.org context and type, required and recommended properties for the ten types above, absolute URLs, ISO 8601 dates, numeric prices with ISO 4217 currencies, ratings inside their scale, and @id references that resolve. Markup added later by JavaScript will not show up, which is worth knowing, because several AI crawlers do not run JavaScript either. For a second opinion, run the same page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.

Common questions
- What is schema markup and does it help SEO?
- Schema markup is structured data, written in the schema.org vocabulary, that describes what a page is about: a business, a product, an article, a person. Google uses it to understand pages and to decide whether a page is eligible for some rich results. It is not a promise of better rankings.
- Does schema markup help ChatGPT and other AI engines understand my site?
- It gives any system that reads your HTML a clean, unambiguous statement of facts such as your name, logo, address and prices, which is easier to parse than prose. AI companies have not published how much weight their engines give it, so treat it as one useful signal, not a guarantee of being cited or recommended.
- Which schema types should every business have?
- Organization (or LocalBusiness if you serve customers at a physical location) on your home page, so engines can tie your name, logo, website and profiles to one entity. Then add the type that matches each page: Product for product pages, Article or BlogPosting for posts, BreadcrumbList for site structure.
- JSON-LD vs microdata: which should I use?
- Google supports JSON-LD, microdata and RDFa, and recommends JSON-LD where your setup allows it, because it sits in one script block apart from your HTML and is easier to maintain. This generator writes JSON-LD; the validator lists microdata and RDFa types it finds and checks JSON-LD in depth.
- Why don't my FAQ rich results show in Google?
- From September 2023 Google showed FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, and from May 2026 it stopped showing them in Search altogether. HowTo rich results were dropped in September 2023. Both markups are still valid and still describe your content to machines, but neither will produce a rich result.
- How do I add schema markup to Shopify or WordPress?
- Check what your theme or SEO plugin already outputs first, so you do not add a second block that contradicts it. In Shopify, site-wide markup goes in layout/theme.liquid before the closing head tag, and product markup belongs in the product template. In WordPress, use your SEO plugin's schema settings, or a header code plugin for a one-off block.
