To track brand mentions in ChatGPT, ask it the same buyer questions from a clean session on a fixed schedule, save every answer, and record whether your brand is named and which sources are cited.
You can do it by hand with a prompt list and a spreadsheet, or with a tracker that runs the prompts every day. This guide covers both, the difference between a mention and a citation, and what your analytics can and cannot show. For tracking the same prompts on Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and other engines, read how to track your brand across AI engines.
Can you see brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Yes, but only by asking. A mention is something that happens in an answer, so the way to see it is to ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and read what comes back. The sources are usually visible too: in Noma by Nurdd’s tracking of its own parent company, Nurdd, ChatGPT listed its sources in 636 of 657 answers (96.8%) between 6 August and 22 October 2026, as reported in what 2,545 AI answers about our own brand show.
The harder part is asking the right questions. In the same tracking, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, the engines named Nurdd in 377 of 379 answers (99.5%) when the prompt included its name, and in 4 of 2,166 (0.2%) when it did not. Asking ChatGPT about your brand by name tells you whether it knows you, not whether it recommends you.
Manual method: prompts to run
- Write the prompts your buyers ask. List category, comparison and problem prompts in your buyers' own words, plus a few branded prompts kept in a group of their own, and stop changing the list.
- Ask each prompt from a clean session. Log out, or turn off memory and personalisation, and paste each prompt exactly, so your own history does not colour the answer.
- Save the full answer. Keep the full text of every answer with its date, so you can re-score it or check a surprising result later.
- Record whether you are named and what is cited. For each answer, note whether your brand is named, where it appears, which competitors are named, which sources are cited and how you are described.
- Repeat on a schedule and read the trend. Run the same prompts on fixed days and judge changes over several weeks, because ChatGPT's answers vary from one run to the next.
Cover the kinds of question a buyer asks, in their words:
- Category prompts. “What is the best tool for [job]?” These test whether ChatGPT recommends you, and they carry most of the signal.
- Comparison prompts. “[Competitor] versus [competitor]” and “alternatives to [your brand]”.
- Problem prompts. A symptom described without naming the category, the way a buyer first asks.
- Branded prompts. “What is [your brand] and what does it do?” Keep these in their own group and read them for accuracy, such as an old price or a discontinued feature.
Take the wording from sales calls, support tickets and community threads. Our guide to which prompts to track covers how to choose them, and the free AI prompt finder suggests questions buyers ask about your category.
Mentions vs citations
A mention is your brand named in ChatGPT’s answer. A citation is your page among the sources the answer links. They are separate results, and either can happen without the other. In our tracking of Nurdd across the four engines, 30 of the 381 answers that named Nurdd (7.9%) also cited its website, as reported in the 2,545-answer study.
Record both for every prompt. A mention without a citation means ChatGPT knows you from somewhere other than your site; the sources it cites show where. Citation vs brand mention explains the two measures, and how to rank in ChatGPT covers how to earn more of each.
Tracking ChatGPT referrals in GA4 (utm_source=chatgpt.com)
Analytics shows a different thing from a mention: a visit from someone who clicked a link in a ChatGPT answer. In GA4, build a segment for sessions whose source is chatgpt.com, and look at which landing pages those visits reach. Some assistants tag the links they show with a source parameter, so check your campaign reports for utm_source=chatgpt.com and count those sessions in the same segment. We have not verified when ChatGPT adds the parameter, so check your own reports rather than relying on it.
The segment undercounts. Referrers get dropped, visits from apps can arrive as direct, and most answers that name you produce no click at all. Read it as a floor and watch its direction, and read it beside your mention tracking rather than instead of it. Our AI search attribution guide sets out the full method, including server logs, which show visits that a blocked analytics script misses.
Tools that track ChatGPT mentions
A tracker runs the same manual method on a schedule and does the recording. The tools below list ChatGPT among the engines they track. The facts come from our comparison of AI visibility and AEO tools, where each was read on the vendor’s own pages on 30 October 2026. Noma by Nurdd makes one of these tools and does not score its competitors, so this is not a quality ranking.

Noma by Nurdd’s ChatGPT visibility tracker asks ChatGPT your prompts from fresh sessions, once a day on paid plans, and records whether your brand is named, where it sits against competitors, how it is described and which URLs ChatGPT cited. The trial runs for 3 days with 25 prompts; plan details are on the pricing page. To see where you stand before setting anything up, run a free brand audit, which asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 10 questions your buyers ask.

Questions people ask
Can you see brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Yes, by asking ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and recording whether each answer names your brand and which sources it cites. Because answers vary between runs, a reliable picture needs the same prompts asked on a schedule from a clean session, by hand or with a tracker.
How can I check ChatGPT mentions of my brand for free?
Run your prompts by hand from a logged-out session and record the answers in a spreadsheet. For a one-off check without an account, Noma by Nurdd's free brand audit asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 10 questions your buyers ask and shows whether your brand is named.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation in ChatGPT?
A mention is your brand named in the answer. A citation is your page among the sources the answer links. In Noma by Nurdd's tracking of its parent company, Nurdd, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude from 6 August to 22 October 2026, 30 of the 381 answers that named Nurdd (7.9%) also cited its site.
Can GA4 show traffic from ChatGPT?
It can show visits that arrive with chatgpt.com as their source. Build a segment for those sessions and check your campaign reports for a chatgpt.com source too. The count undercounts, because referrers get dropped and most answers produce no click, so read it as a floor and watch its direction.
How often should you check ChatGPT for brand mentions?
On a fixed schedule you can keep, and read the results as a trend over several weeks rather than reacting to a single day. On paid plans, Noma by Nurdd runs every tracked prompt once a day.
