ChatGPT Ads and AI Visibility: How to Report Them Apart

ChatGPT ads are paid placements, not brand mentions. See how they work per OpenAI and how to report ads separately from organic AI visibility.

Who can buy ChatGPT ads, and where do they show?

Who can buy them. Businesses sign up at ads.openai.com. To use self-service Ads Manager, the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a country OpenAI lists as available; the list includes the United States, the United Kingdom, India and many European countries. Advertisers in the newer European markets can currently start through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team, agency partners or technology partners, and larger advertisers can ask the OpenAI Ads team for sales support (Ads Manager Availability). Some advertisers in regulated categories such as health and financial services may be eligible if they meet OpenAI’s criteria, and political advertising is currently not allowed.

Where they show. One ad unit, which may hold one or several images, below a ChatGPT response; OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad during image generation. Each ad carries the advertiser’s name, favicon, title, copy, landing page and image (Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics).

Where they do not. On Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts; for accounts identified as belonging to people under 18; in Temporary Chats; and near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics. Ads shown to signed-out users are limited to ones appropriate for all audiences (Ads in ChatGPT).

How one ad is chosen over another. OpenAI says it weighs relevance and advertiser bids, in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. It also says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, which is why an ad never counts as a mention or a citation. For how the answers themselves find their sources, see how ChatGPT search works.

Last checked 5 November 2026 against OpenAI’s own pages.

ChatGPT ads are labelled, paid placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answer, so they are not organic brand mentions and should never be counted in AI visibility. OpenAI states that ads do not influence answers. Report ad results from Ads Manager and organic mentions from your own prompt tracking as two separate lines.

Key takeaways

  • A ChatGPT ad is a paid placement. A brand mention is the brand named inside the answer. A citation is a source link inside the answer. Only the last two are AI visibility.
  • OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses (OpenAI Help Center, as checked 3 November 2026).
  • Ad performance lives in OpenAI's Ads Manager Beta. Organic visibility has to be measured by running buyer prompts and recording the answers.
  • Report two lines, never a blended total: paid ChatGPT ads, and organic ChatGPT mentions, position, sentiment and citations.
  • You cannot pay to be named in the answer itself. Paying buys the ad slot below it.
  • Noma by Nurdd tracks organic ChatGPT answers. It does not track ads.

How do ChatGPT ads work?

OpenAI's Help Center describes ChatGPT Ads as a way for advertisers to reach people as they explore, compare and decide inside a conversation. Ads appear below ChatGPT responses, and the system uses the context of the current conversation to pick one (OpenAI Help Center, as checked 3 November 2026).

Selection is automated. OpenAI says the ads system chooses and delivers ads based on expected relevance and outcomes. When a user has ads personalisation switched on, select signals from their wider ChatGPT experience may also be used. That information stays within ChatGPT and is not shared with advertisers. Advertisers can supply context hints, but OpenAI says these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations.

OpenAI's engineering write-up explains why ads should not touch answers: the ads selection process runs alongside ChatGPT's normal response generation, so the ads flow does not influence what ChatGPT says (OpenAI, as checked 3 November 2026).

Scale and availability

OpenAI reports that ChatGPT Ads is available in 89 countries and that over 100,000 advertisers have used the platform (OpenAI, as checked 3 November 2026). It also describes an advertising-supported free tier that helps keep ChatGPT available to more than 1 billion weekly active users (OpenAI, as checked 3 November 2026).

Ads are shown only to users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI's help article also describes an Ads-Free option on the Free plan that removes ads and reduces Free usage limits.

That matters for measurement. Ads reach only part of ChatGPT's audience, so a paid campaign cannot stand in for organic visibility, and organic visibility cannot tell you how an ad performed.

How advertisers buy and measure

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads supports impression and valid-click billing. Ads Manager Beta reporting currently includes impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Advertisers can also add static tracking parameters, such as UTMs, to see ad traffic in existing analytics tools (OpenAI Help Center, as checked 3 November 2026). OpenAI's Europe announcement adds that measurement now extends beyond clicks through the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API and third-party measurement integrations (OpenAI, as checked 3 November 2026).

One practical detail for site owners: OpenAI's ad creation guide says landing pages must not block its user agents OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI Help Center, as checked 3 November 2026). Check your robots.txt and firewall with the free AI Crawler Checker before you spend.

OpenAI's own FAQ says ChatGPT Ads is in beta and, as an early platform, has no performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types. Use your own Ads Manager data, not figures from blogs.

Do ChatGPT ads affect which brands ChatGPT recommends?

By OpenAI's own account, no. Its help article states: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers." It adds that advertisers have no ability to shape, rank or alter responses, and that seeing an ad does not mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser.

OpenAI repeats the point in each announcement: ads are clearly labelled and separate from answers, and advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

Treat that as a published position, not a reason to stop checking. If you run ads, record organic mention rate on a fixed prompt set for several weeks before the campaign and keep the prompt set unchanged during it. A shift during the campaign is worth investigating, but it cannot on its own show that ads influenced answers, because other factors and ordinary run-to-run variation also move the rate. Read any change against the spread, as this note on AI citation stability explains.

What is the difference between a ChatGPT ad and an organic brand mention?

A ChatGPT ad is bought. An organic mention is your brand named inside the answer text, and an organic citation is a source link attached to that answer. The ad is a different unit, shown outside the answer and labelled as an ad.

The mention-versus-citation split is covered in full in Citation vs Brand Mention in AI Search. Ads add a third column, and the point of this guide is to keep it out of the other two.

Can I pay to be recommended in ChatGPT?

You can pay to appear in an ad slot. You cannot pay to be recommended inside the answer. OpenAI says ads are paid placements, run on separate systems from the chat model, and that an ad is not an endorsement or recommendation of the advertiser (OpenAI Help Center, as checked 3 November 2026).

If a vendor sells "ChatGPT recommendation placement" as a paid service, ask where the placement shows. If it is below the response and labelled, it is an ad. If it claims to alter the answer, it contradicts OpenAI's published position.

What does ChatGPT advertising mean for AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often and how accurately AI engines name your brand for buyer questions. Ads do not change that definition, but they create three new ways to get the reporting wrong.

  1. Blending. Adding ad impressions to mention counts makes visibility look better while measuring nothing about the answer.
  2. Mis-attribution. A rise in chatgpt.com traffic during a campaign gets credited to organic work, or the reverse. UTMs on ad URLs separate the two.
  3. Competitor confusion. A rival that appears in an ad slot is not the same as a rival named in the answer. Counting both inflates their share of voice.

The measurement rules in What Is AI Visibility? still hold: fixed prompts, repeated runs, stated numerators and denominators. The only addition is a rule about what counts as an observation.

How do I track my brand in ChatGPT answers separately from ads?

Use a two-line report. It takes an afternoon to set up and works with or without a tool.

Step 1: Define what counts as organic

Write a rule in your measurement doc: only text inside the answer and links in its citations or sources list count. Anything labelled as an ad, or shown separately below the response, is excluded. Apply it when you log each answer.

Step 2: Fix the prompt set

Pick unbranded buyer questions and keep them stable. Which Prompts Should You Track? covers how. For example, 20 prompts run 5 times each gives 100 answers per cycle, and your mention rate is answers naming you divided by 100.

Step 3: Record organic fields per answer

  • Brand named: yes or no
  • Position among named brands
  • Words used about the brand (sentiment)
  • Cited URLs and domains
  • Competitors named
  • Whether an ad was shown, as a separate yes or no field that never feeds the mention count

Step 4: Pull paid data from Ads Manager

Take impressions, clicks, spend and conversions from Ads Manager Beta. Tag landing pages with UTM parameters so analytics can split ad visits from organic referrals.

Step 5: Report both, side by side

Where Noma fits

Noma by Nurdd is an answer engine optimisation platform. For ChatGPT it tracks organic mentions, position, sentiment and the sources cited in answers, daily, as part of tracking 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. It does not track ads: ad impressions, clicks and spend stay in OpenAI's Ads Manager. See the plans on the pricing page and the ChatGPT visibility tracker.

See it on your own brand: book a demo or start the 3-day free trial. A card is taken at signup so billing can start on day 3; cancel before then and nothing is charged.

Common mistakes when reporting ChatGPT ads

  • Counting a sponsored slot as a "mention" in a share-of-voice chart.
  • Reading a rise in clicks as proof that ChatGPT now recommends you.
  • Changing the prompt set during a campaign, which makes before and after incomparable.
  • Judging organic visibility from your own logged-in session, which may or may not show ads and personalisation.
  • Quoting ad benchmarks from blogs when OpenAI says none exist yet.

How we researched this

We reviewed OpenAI's announcements on ChatGPT Ads, its ad stack engineering post, and its Help Center articles on ads, ad creation, the ads FAQ and ad measurement. We also looked at current search results for "chatgpt ads" to see what third-party guides cover, but took no figures from them. Facts were checked on 2026-11-03. OpenAI's ads programme is changing quickly, so recheck the Help Center before you set reporting rules.

Questions people ask

How do ChatGPT ads work?

OpenAI shows labelled, paid ads below ChatGPT responses, chosen by an automated system using the conversation's context and, with personalisation on, select signals from the user's ChatGPT experience. Advertisers are billed on impressions or valid clicks and report through Ads Manager Beta. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model.

Do ChatGPT ads affect which brands ChatGPT recommends?

OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses. To check on your own brand, hold a prompt set fixed and watch organic mention rate before and during a campaign. A shift is worth investigating but does not by itself prove influence.

What is the difference between a ChatGPT ad and an organic brand mention?

An ad is a paid, labelled placement shown below the answer. An organic mention is your brand named inside the answer text. Ads are measured in Ads Manager, mentions through repeated prompt runs.

How do I track my brand in ChatGPT answers separately from ads?

Count only text inside the answer and its citations as organic, and log any ad as a separate field that never feeds the mention count. Take paid data from Ads Manager Beta and use UTMs to split ad visits from organic referrals. Report the two as separate lines.

Can I pay to be recommended in ChatGPT?

You can pay for an ad slot, but OpenAI says ads are separate from answers and that an ad does not mean OpenAI recommends the advertiser. Paying does not buy a mention inside the answer.

What does ChatGPT advertising mean for AI visibility?

AI visibility still means how often and how accurately engines name your brand in answers. Ads add a paid layer that must stay out of that count. Blending the two overstates visibility and muddles attribution.

Does Noma track ChatGPT ads?

No. Noma by Nurdd tracks organic mentions, position, sentiment and cited sources in ChatGPT answers. Ad data stays in OpenAI's Ads Manager.

Who can buy ChatGPT ads?

Businesses sign up at ads.openai.com. Self-service Ads Manager needs the advertising and billed legal entity to be based in a country OpenAI lists as available, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom and India. In newer European markets, advertisers can currently get started through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team or its agency and technology partners.

Where do ChatGPT ads appear?

Below a ChatGPT response, for users on the Free and Go plans, with a multi-image format being tested during image generation. OpenAI says ads do not appear on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, in Temporary Chats, for accounts identified as under 18, or near sensitive topics such as health and politics.
