AI engines do cite YouTube, but rarely in some categories. In Noma’s own tracking for a marketing technology brand, YouTube appeared in 15 of 1,823 answers that listed sources, most often in Perplexity. To know whether it matters for you, ask your category’s questions in each engine and count the YouTube links in the sources.

Video is often talked about as a way into AI answers. Whether it works depends on the questions in your category and the engines your buyers use, and you can check that directly. This guide shows how, with what our own data found.

How often do AI answers cite YouTube?

We counted YouTube links in the answers Noma collected for Nurdd, the company that builds Noma, across 96 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude between 6 August and 22 October 2026 (the data behind our study of 2,545 AI answers):

youtube.com ranked 165th of the 2,247 domains these answers cited. For this brand’s questions, about choosing marketing tools and services, the engines leaned on software vendors’ sites, help documentation and social networks instead: the five most-cited domains were semrush.com, analytics.google.com, ahrefs.com, support.google.com and linkedin.com. One brand’s prompts in one category are not a rule: categories built on how-tos, tutorials or product demos may see far more video. That is why it is worth measuring your own.

How to check whether AI answers cite YouTube for your category

Step 1. List the questions that matter

Write down 20 to 50 questions buyers ask about your category, including how-to and comparison questions, which are the kinds a video can answer.

Mix stages: “what is”, “how do I” and “which tool is best for”. The free AI prompt finder builds a starting list from Google search data.

Step 2. Ask them in engines that show sources

Put each question to the AI engines your buyers use, from a fresh session, and keep the list of sources each answer cites.

Engines differ in how often they list sources at all: in our data Perplexity listed them in every answer, while Gemini did in about half. Ask in each engine your buyers use, rather than one.

Step 3. Count YouTube citations per engine

Mark every source on youtube.com or youtu.be, and count the answers that cite YouTube for each engine and each question.

Count answers, not links: one answer can cite several videos.

Step 4. Note whose videos are cited

Open each cited video and record the channel: yours, a competitor's, a creator's or a publisher's, and what the video covers.

A cited video from a creator or publisher can be as useful to you as your own, if it describes your product accurately. If it gets something wrong, that is a correction to ask for.

Step 5. Repeat on a schedule

Ask the same questions again over several weeks, because AI citations change from run to run and one check can mislead.

Citations turn over fast: in the same data, only 36.1% of cited URLs were cited again within a week. See how long AI citations last.

What to do if YouTube is cited for your questions

  • Make the content readable as text. A clear title, a description that answers the question, chapters and an accurate transcript give engines words to work with.
  • Publish the answer on your site too. A page that covers the same question gives engines a second source and readers a text version.
  • Work with the channels already cited. If a creator’s video is the one engines use, make sure it has your current facts.

If YouTube is rarely cited for your questions, put the effort where engines do look. See how AI engines choose citations.

Tools that track YouTube in AI answers

Any tool that stores the sources of each answer lets you count YouTube citations, Noma by Nurdd included: each answer is kept with its cited sources. Ahrefs’ Brand Radar page also lists YouTube, TikTok and Reddit data for Ahrefs customers, free while in beta, as read on 5 November 2026.

In Noma, sources are explained in the help centre: what sources are and why they matter and why source usage changes. To see which sources AI answers cite for your brand today, run a free brand audit.

Questions people ask

Do AI engines cite YouTube videos?

Yes, but how often depends on the category and the engine. In Noma's own tracking for a marketing technology brand, YouTube was cited in 15 of 1,823 answers that listed sources, most often by Perplexity (9 answers). Check your own category, because how-to and product-demo questions may draw on video more.

How do I know if ChatGPT or Perplexity cites my YouTube videos?

Ask each engine the questions your buyers ask, keep the sources each answer lists, and look for youtube.com and youtu.be links. Note whose channel each video belongs to, and repeat over several weeks. A tracking tool that stores every answer's sources can do this on a schedule.

Which AI engine cites YouTube most?

In Noma's sample, Perplexity: 9 of its 617 answers cited YouTube, against 3 of 636 for ChatGPT, 2 of 246 for Claude and 1 of 324 for Gemini. That is one brand's prompts over three months, so treat it as a starting point and measure your own.

Should I make YouTube videos to get cited by AI?

Only if your buyers' questions are ones a video answers well, such as how-tos and demos, and you check that engines cite video for them. If they rarely do in your category, the review sites, lists and articles they cite instead are a better use of the same effort.
