Gemini UTM Parameters: How to Track Gemini Referrals

Gemini UTM parameters reportedly vanished around 28 September. Confirm it, find Gemini traffic by referrer and landing page, and track citations by prompt.

Did Gemini stop adding UTM parameters to cited links? Reportedly, yes. Search Engine Roundtable, October 2026, says Google began adding utm_source=gemini to Gemini's cited URLs in early September and stopped around 28 September. Gemini UTM parameters are gone, but the desktop referrer remains.

Key takeaways

  • The Gemini UTM tag is reported as gone since about 28 September 2026. Google has not documented it either way in the sources reviewed, so treat it as an observation, not a policy.
  • Desktop Gemini still passes a gemini.google.com referrer, so GA4's AI Assistant channel should still catch that traffic.
  • Gemini iOS app clicks reportedly send no referrer and land in Direct. The only trace is a user agent in server logs.
  • Do not build a Gemini report on UTMs alone. Combine referrer, landing page, server logs and prompt-level tracking.
  • Analytics shows visits. It cannot show where Gemini cites you without a click. That needs a fixed prompt set run on a schedule.

What happened to Gemini UTM parameters?

The timeline comes from two reports. Search Engine Journal, October 2026, covered Google Gemini adding UTM parameters to outgoing links, noting that Google's implementation was undocumented. Then Search Engine Roundtable reported the reverse.

One detail matters for your reports. According to Search Engine Roundtable, visits with a gemini.google.com referrer stayed flat the whole time. The tag came and went, but the referrer did not move.

Google's John Mueller was part of the original discussion. He wrote that he would forward details to the team if someone had more on what happens with the referrer, ideally something he could reproduce (Search Engine Journal, October 2026). That is an invitation for reproducible tests, not a commitment on UTMs.

How do I confirm the change on my own site?

Do not rely on a headline. A five-step check takes under an hour in GA4 and your server logs.

  1. Pull landing page URLs with query strings. In GA4 Explore, add Landing page + query string as a dimension. Filter for utm_source=gemini.
  2. Plot it by day. If the tag appeared in September and stopped near 28 September on your site too, your data matches the report. If you never saw it, your pages may not have been cited in a way that triggered it.
  3. Plot the referrer separately. Filter session source for gemini.google.com. Compare the line with the UTM line. A flat referrer line with a falling UTM line is the reported pattern.
  4. Check Direct. Look for landing pages that Gemini would plausibly cite but that show rising Direct sessions with no campaign data.
  5. Search server logs. Natzir, quoted by Search Engine Roundtable, points to a GeminiiOS user agent as the only trace of iOS app visits.

Keep one caveat in view. Search Engine Journal noted that, at the time, nobody knew when Gemini's tag fired, because Google had not documented it. A missing tag therefore does not prove a missing citation.

How do I track traffic from Gemini in Google Analytics?

Google Analytics has a default AI Assistant channel. Per Google Analytics Help, it covers visitors arriving from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. Search Engine Journal, May 2026, reported its launch. It works from referrer data, so it does not depend on UTMs.

A practical GA4 setup

  • Build a saved Exploration with source, medium and landing page, filtered to the AI Assistant channel, and a second with gemini.google.com as source.
  • Add a Direct view filtered to the landing pages Gemini cites for your prompts. A rise there after Gemini exposure is a hint, not proof.
  • Annotate 28 September 2026 on every trend chart so nobody reads the UTM drop as a traffic drop.

Why this is not a traffic collapse

The ChatGPT precedent applies. Search Engine Journal, October 2026, reported that Graphite CEO Ethan Smith saw an approximate 45% drop in ChatGPT sessions on tracked sites after links stopped carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com. The same publication noted that total traffic on those sites stayed relatively constant. The visits did not disappear. The labels did.

A Gemini UTM drop is the same kind of problem. If a report shows fewer Gemini sessions after 28 September, check Direct before telling anyone that Gemini stopped sending visitors.

Search Engine Journal quotes Google's John Mueller asking for something he can reproduce on how Gemini handles the referrer.

Why analytics alone cannot show where Gemini cites you

Analytics sees only the people who clicked. Most AI answers end without a click, so a brand can be named or cited in Gemini and never appear in GA4. The click is also the end of the story: it does not tell you which prompt triggered the citation, which competitor was named next to you, or which of your pages Gemini used. See citation vs brand mention for why those are separate outcomes.

Pair analytics with prompt-level tracking:

  1. Write a fixed set of buyer prompts. Which prompts to track shows how.
  2. Run them in Gemini on a schedule, from clean sessions, several times each. AI citation stability explains why one run is not enough.
  3. Record whether you are named, whether your URL is cited, and which sources are used.
  4. Line up the citation dates with the GA4 referrer and Direct trend for the cited pages.

Where Noma fits

Noma by Nurdd is an AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI visibility platform. It asks 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, the questions your buyers ask every day. For Gemini it shows whether your brand is named, how high, with what sentiment, and which pages the answer cites. That covers the exposure analytics cannot see, with or without a UTM tag.

What to check this week

  • Annotate 28 September 2026 in GA4 and any BI dashboards.
  • Confirm the AI Assistant channel is in your reports and that gemini.google.com appears as a source.
  • Ask your developer to search logs for the GeminiiOS user agent.
  • Stop using utm_source=gemini as the only Gemini filter. Keep it for the historical weeks.
  • Confirm your site is open to AI crawlers with the free AI crawler checker, which shows whether bots such as Google's and ClaudeBot can fetch your pages.
  • Set up a weekly Gemini prompt set, and read how to monitor your website in AI chatbot answers if you are starting from nothing.

How we researched this

We reviewed the Search Engine Roundtable report, Search Engine Journal coverage of the Gemini and ChatGPT tagging changes, and Google Analytics Help documentation on the AI Assistant channel. We did not run our own traffic tests. The change is reported by analysts, not confirmed by Google. Facts, dates and links were checked on 2026-11-01.

Questions people ask

Did Gemini stop adding UTM parameters to cited links?

Reportedly, yes. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 30 October 2026 that Gemini's cited URLs stopped carrying utm_source=gemini around 28 September, after the tag appeared in early September. Google has not documented the behaviour in the sources reviewed, so confirm it on your own site.

How do I track traffic from Gemini in Google Analytics?

Use the default AI Assistant channel and filter session source for gemini.google.com. Add a landing page + query string view for historical utm_source=gemini, and check Direct for pages Gemini cites. iOS app clicks reportedly send no referrer.

Does Gemini still pass a referrer?

On desktop web, yes, according to Search Engine Roundtable. Visits with a gemini.google.com referrer stayed flat while the UTM tag came and went. Analyst Natzir reports the iOS app sends no referrer, so those visits land in Direct.

Where does Gemini iOS app traffic show up?

Reportedly in GA4's Direct channel, because the app opens links in its own WebView without a referrer. The only trace Natzir found is a GeminiiOS user agent in server logs.

Is a drop in Gemini sessions after 28 September real?

Not necessarily. ChatGPT showed the same pattern: Graphite reported an approximate 45% drop in ChatGPT sessions after tags went missing, while total traffic stayed relatively constant. Check Direct and the gemini.google.com referrer before drawing conclusions.

How can I see where Gemini cites my brand if analytics cannot?

Run a fixed set of buyer prompts in Gemini on a schedule, several times each, and record mentions and cited URLs. Noma by Nurdd does this daily across 13 AI engines, including Gemini. The free brand audit gives a first look.
