The short answer

Reddit, YouTube and other community content matter for AI visibility because assistants read and cite them; Google and OpenAI each announced access to Reddit's Data API in 2024. Find the threads and videos already cited for your prompts, take part openly within each platform's and community's rules, disclose every connection, and measure citations rather than posts.

What you will learn

  1. Chapter 1

Why community content shows up in answers

    • Assistants can cite community content because it often matches the specific, constrained questions people ask.
    • Google (February 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024) each announced access to Reddit's Data API; neither announcement says how heavily Reddit is weighted.
    • Engines use video and podcasts mainly through their text: titles, descriptions, chapters, captions and transcripts.
    • Community content is valuable because it is independent, so undisclosed promotion destroys the thing you wanted.
    • Measure the share of community sources in your own answers instead of relying on published percentages.
  2. Chapter 2

Find the threads and videos cited for your prompts

    • Start from the answers you care about and work back to the specific community URLs they cite.
    • Calculate your own community share per engine from cited sources, and keep branded prompts out of it.
    • Search results for your prompts reveal the threads and videos that engines are likely to fetch next.
    • Score each URL for citation weight, accuracy gap, activity, rules fit and risk before anyone posts.
    • Locked threads and vendor-free communities still respond to indirect work: fixes, updated pages and new evidence.
  3. Chapter 3

    Reddit participation inside its rules

    • Reddit's Rule 2 requires authentic participation and forbids spam and content manipulation; Rule 5 forbids misleading others or deceptive impersonation.
    • Each subreddit's own rules apply on top of Reddit's; read them, and ask moderators when unsure.
    • Speak through identified employees and clearly named brand accounts, with disclosure at the start of every relevant comment.
    • Useful contributions answer the question, name alternatives honestly and admit limits.
    • Complaint threads shape how engines qualify your name; acknowledge, fix and document rather than argue.
  4. Chapter 4

YouTube and podcasts that can be quoted

    • Engines use video and audio mainly through text, so the claims you care about must be said aloud and captioned accurately.
    • Review automatic captions for every important video; YouTube itself warns they can misrepresent speech.
    • Chapters, titles and the first lines of the description should state the question and the answer in buyer language.
    • Plan videos and podcast topics from your tracked prompts, not from your launch calendar.
    • Pair each important video or episode with a dated companion page carrying the transcript and key claims.
  5. Chapter 5

    Creator programmes built for citation

    • Choose creators whose content is cited or ranks for your prompts, not those with the largest audiences.
    • Brief creators with accurate facts, limits and buyer questions, and leave the opinion to them.
    • The FTC's Disclosures 101 guide calls for clear disclosure with the endorsement, and in the video itself, not only the description, for video content.
    • Free products, discounts and affiliate links are material connections and need disclosure like payment.
    • Never make payment or partnership depend on a positive opinion or rating.
  6. Chapter 6

Employee advocacy, and what not to do

    • Employees are your most credible participants when they disclose their employer every time and follow each community's rules.
    • Make participation voluntary, without post quotas, and never ask colleagues to vote on company content.
    • Astroturfing, sock puppets and undisclosed paid posting break platform rules and US consumer protection rules.
    • The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews, sentiment-conditioned incentives, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression and fake social media indicators.
    • Have legal review your community, creator and review programmes against each market's current rules.
  7. Chapter 7

Measure it, and a 90-day plan

    • Measure community work by citations, presence and description in answers, not by posts and engagement.
    • Favourable citation share shows whether the community pages that engines cite describe you accurately and fairly.
    • Log every contribution against the prompts it was meant to influence, and check which ones are cited at each run.
    • Be careful with cause and effect: compare against prompts you did not work on and report observable patterns.
    • In 90 days: baseline, score, write the guidelines, take part and fix, improve video, then rerun and report.

The chapters explain the method. The worksheets are what you fill in to run it: print them, or copy the tables into a document of your own.

Questions

Does ChatGPT use Reddit?
Yes, by the companies' own account. In May 2024 Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership under which OpenAI accesses Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products. How much a given answer relies on Reddit varies; check the cited sources for your own prompts.
Is Reddit good for AI visibility?
It can be, when Reddit threads are cited for the questions your buyers ask, which you can check in the cited sources of your tracked answers. Google and OpenAI both announced access to Reddit's Data API in 2024. The value comes from genuine, disclosed participation and fixing what people complain about, not from posting volume.
What is Reddit GEO?
It is a name for work aimed at making Reddit discussions that generative engines cite more accurate and more favourable to a brand. Done properly, it means finding the threads cited for your prompts, taking part openly as an identified brand or employee within Reddit's and each subreddit's rules, and measuring citations. Planting posts or manipulating votes breaks Reddit's rules.
How do I get my brand mentioned on Reddit?
Be useful where your buyers ask questions, as an identified employee, and let customers mention you on their own. Read each community's rules, disclose who you work for at the start of every relevant comment, answer the question asked, and name alternatives where they fit better. Never use fake accounts or ask colleagues to vote.
Does YouTube help with AI search?
YouTube videos can be cited in AI answers, and engines use them mostly through their text: titles, descriptions, chapters, captions and transcripts. Say your key claims aloud, review automatic captions, add chapters and put the answer in the first lines of the description. Check whether videos appear in the cited sources for your prompts.
Do creators need to disclose sponsored content mentioning our brand?
Yes. The FTC's Disclosures 101 guide says any financial, employment, personal or family relationship must be disclosed clearly with the endorsement, and in video it should be in the video itself, not only the description; disclosing in both audio and video makes it more likely to be noticed. Free products and affiliate links count. Other countries have their own rules, such as the ASA and CMA guidance in the UK.
Can employees post about our product on Reddit?
They can, if they follow Reddit's rules and each community's rules and disclose their employer whenever they mention the product, competitors or the category. The FTC's 2024 rule bans insider reviews and testimonials that do not clearly disclose the connection. Do not set post quotas or ask colleagues to vote.
How do I measure whether community work improves AI answers?
Run a fixed set of unbranded prompts on each engine, record every cited source, and calculate the share of answers that cite community pages and whether those pages describe you accurately. Log each contribution against the prompts it targets, rerun after 90 days, and compare with prompts you did not work on.
Is Community and Creator Signals Without Spam free?
Yes. Give a first name and a work email and the download starts at once. We also email you the link, and one person from the Noma team follows up a day later; reply and say so if you would rather not hear from us.
Why do you ask for a work email?
The playbooks are written for teams at companies, and a work address tells us which company is reading, so a follow-up can be about your brand rather than generic. Personal and temporary inboxes are not accepted.
What format is it?
A PDF of 41 A4 pages, laid out to print, with worksheets you can fill in by hand or copy into a document of your own.
