Free llms.txt Generator and Validator

Generate a clean llms.txt from your sitemap, edit it, and download it. Or check the file you already have, and its links, against the llmstxt.org format.

We read your sitemap, pick the pages that matter and write the file. Takes 15 to 40 seconds.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain markdown file served at the root of a site. It starts with the site's name as a heading, then a one or two sentence summary in a blockquote, then sections of links to the pages that matter, each with a short description. A section called Optional holds links a tool may skip when it is short on space. Here is an example for a made-up company:

# Northwind

> Northwind makes invoicing software for freelancers and small agencies.

What it does, and what it does not

llms.txt is a community proposal from llmstxt.org, not a standard. Google has said it does not use it for Search, and no major AI search engine has confirmed that it reads the file when ranking or citing pages. Some assistants, coding agents and documentation tools do read it, and it costs almost nothing to publish. We recommend it as hygiene. If you want to know whether AI engines mention you, that is a different question, and this file will not answer it.

How the generator picks pages

We read your sitemap (up to 2,000 URLs), or the links on your homepage when there is no sitemap. We group URLs by section, then pick up to 40: your homepage, pricing, about and contact pages, the index page of each section, the most recent docs and guides, a few products, and a few recent posts. We read those pages, honouring your robots.txt, and write the file from their titles, descriptions and opening paragraphs. Every link in the file is a page we read on your site: anything else is removed before you see it. You can then edit, reorder, remove and add links before you download.

What the validator checks

That /llms.txt answers with HTTP 200 as plain text rather than an HTML page, that it starts with one H1, has a summary and at least one section of links in the right format, that links are absolute and mostly point to your own site, that up to 25 of them work, and that robots.txt does not block assistant bots from the file. The score measures the file against the format. It does not predict rankings.

llms.txt, robots.txt and sitemap.xml

robots.txt says what crawlers may fetch. sitemap.xml lists every URL you want found. llms.txt is a short, curated map written for language models. They do different jobs, and llms.txt replaces neither of the others. Common questions

What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a markdown file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt, that gives language models and AI tools a short map of the site: its name, a one or two sentence summary, and lists of links to the pages that matter, each with a short description. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.
Does llms.txt improve my rankings in ChatGPT or Google?
There is no evidence that it does. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search, and no major AI search engine has confirmed using it when ranking or citing pages. It is useful to the assistants, coding agents and tools that do read it, and cheap to add, so treat it as hygiene rather than a ranking lever.
What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is a short list of links with descriptions. llms-full.txt is an optional companion that puts the main text of those pages into one file, so a tool can read your content without fetching each page.
Where do I put llms.txt on WordPress, Shopify or Next.js?
It must be reachable at https://yourdomain/llms.txt as plain text. On Next.js, put it in the public folder or add an app/llms.txt/route.ts. On WordPress, upload it to the site root or use an SEO plugin option if yours has one. Shopify does not allow uploads to the store root, so use an app that serves the file or check Shopify's current guidance.
How many links should my llms.txt have?
Enough to cover the pages a reader needs, and no more. Our generator aims for 8 to 30 links and our validator warns below 5 or above 60, because a file that lists every URL is a sitemap, not a map.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch, and many of them obey it. llms.txt does not allow or block anything. It only describes your site for the tools that choose to read it.
