Will the Search Console AI performance report ever show clicks? Probably not soon. On 2 November 2026, Google's Gary Illyes replied to a claim that click and query data were coming, and gave no commitment. The **search console ai performance report clicks** gap is real today, and you can work around it.

## Key takeaways

- The AI performance report counts impressions by page, country, device and date. It has no click or query column.
- Illyes did not announce clicks. Plan as if the report stays impression-only.
- Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are not lost: Google folds them into the "Web" search type of the standard Performance report, where you cannot split them out.
- In GA4, those clicks arrive as Google organic. Only visits from other assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity and so on) can be isolated by referrer rule.
- Track a fixed prompt set on a schedule to see whether your brand is named and cited, which no click report can tell you.

## What did Gary Illyes say about clicks in the AI performance report?

Search Engine Roundtable reported on [Search Engine Roundtable, November 2026](https://www.seroundtable.com/click-data-search-console-ai-reporting-42437.html) that a LinkedIn post quoted an unnamed Googler from a Search Central live event saying clicks and queries data was anticipated but with no date. Illyes replied that he did not think Google had phrased it that way.

> "data that makes sense, but we don't have anything to announce yet." Gary Illyes, Google, quoted by [Search Engine Roundtable, November 2026](https://www.seroundtable.com/click-data-search-console-ai-reporting-42437.html)

Barry Schwartz read this as an implication that click and query data may not be coming. He also noted that John Mueller called it a weird way of reading the comment on Bluesky, so the door is not formally shut. Treat it as unconfirmed either way: no announcement exists.

## What does the report show today?

Google launched the reports on its [Google Search Central Blog, June 2026](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports) as dedicated views of impressions inside AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. [Search Engine Journal, 2026](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-search-console-ai-reports-rolled-out-worldwide/587836/) reports Google says they have rolled out to all sites worldwide, and that sites with too few AI impressions may not see a report.

| Data point | In the AI performance report? | Where else to get it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Impressions | Yes | Also inside overall Performance report |
| Pages | Yes | Performance report |
| Countries, dates (hourly to monthly) | Yes | Performance report |
| Devices | Search report only | Performance report |
| Clicks | No | Web totals only, not split by AI |
| Queries | No | Standard Performance queries, not tagged as AI |

Table based on the report's listed dimensions in [Semrush, June 2026](https://www.semrush.com/blog/google-adds-ai-performance-reports/) and Search Engine Roundtable's earlier report that [the reporting does not show click data](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-performance-report-blocking-controls-41443.html).

## Will Google Search Console show clicks from AI Mode?

Search Console counts them but does not label them. Google's documentation on [AI features and your website (Google Search Central, checked November 2026)](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic, reported in the Performance report under the "Web" search type.

So a click on your link inside AI Mode is in your total clicks. It is indistinguishable from a blue-link click. Impressions are the only AI-specific figure.

## How do I measure traffic from Google AI answers?

Use three layers, because no single report covers the whole path.

1. **Impressions by page (Search Console AI report).** Export the AI impressions for your top pages.
2. **Clicks by page (standard Performance report, Web).** Export clicks for the same pages and dates.
3. **Sessions by landing page (GA4).** Filter to Organic Search and the same landing pages.

Then compare page by page. If a page's AI impressions rise sharply and its total clicks stay flat, the extra impressions are not producing visits. If clicks rise on the same pages, AI exposure is a plausible contributor. That is a directional read, not attribution, because the page also earns classic impressions. Say so in the report.

One site's published numbers show the scale of the issue. A property analysed by [Taismo, October 2026](https://taismo.de/en/seo-magazine/search-console-ai-report/) recorded 42,266 impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode against 340,804 in classic web search over the same period, and 47.5 percent of the AI impressions came from a single URL. It is one site, not a benchmark, but it shows why a page-level view matters: AI exposure concentrates.

## How do I set up GA4 referrer rules for AI assistants?

Referrer rules catch assistants that send a visible referrer. They cannot catch Google AI Mode, because those visits arrive as a Google search click. [Peec AI's documentation (as checked 3 November 2026)](https://docs.peec.ai/ai-referrals.md) says the same: GA4 classifies Google AI Overviews and AI Mode as organic search, not AI referral.

1. In GA4, open Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, and create a custom channel group.
2. Add a channel named "AI assistants" with a condition on Session source matching a regex such as *chatgpt|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot*.
3. Place it above the default Referral channel so it takes priority.
4. Check Realtime by opening your site from a live assistant answer and confirming the source.
5. Save a Direct vs AI segment, since some assistant visits arrive with no referrer.

Third-party guides, including [Darwin Apps, 2026](https://www.darwinapps.com/blog/how-to-track-chatgpt-gemini-and-perplexity-referral-traffic-in-ga4-and-crm/), say GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel in May 2026 that excludes Perplexity and every session without a referrer. Check whether your property shows it before building your own. A custom group covers the gaps either way.

### What this setup cannot see

- Google AI Mode and AI Overviews clicks (they sit in Organic Search).
- Visits from apps that strip the referrer, which land in Direct.
- People who read a recommendation, then search your brand name later.

That last group is why [zero-click search](https://nomahq.app/blog/what-is-zero-click-search) makes clicks an undercount of influence. For the full method, see Noma's guides on [AI search attribution](https://nomahq.app/blog/ai-search-attribution-guide) and [Gemini referral tracking](https://nomahq.app/blog/gemini-utm-parameters-track-referrals).

## Why does prompt-level tracking fill the gap?

Clicks only record the people who clicked. Prompt-level tracking records the answer itself: you ask the questions your buyers ask, on a fixed schedule, and log whether your brand is named, where, and which URLs are cited. It answers questions that Search Console's impressions cannot, such as which competitor was named instead of you, and whether the answer got your pricing right.

The test for any prompt set is repeatability. Use the same wording, repeat each prompt several times because answers vary (see [AI citation stability](https://nomahq.app/blog/ai-citation-stability)), and report mention rate with its numerator and denominator. [Which prompts to track](https://nomahq.app/blog/which-prompts-to-track) covers how to build the set.

| Question you need answered | Best source |
| --- | --- |
| Did my pages appear in Google AI features? | Search Console AI performance report |
| Did those appearances produce Google visits? | Performance report Web clicks plus GA4 organic landing pages (directional) |
| Did ChatGPT or Perplexity send visitors? | GA4 custom channel group |
| Is my brand named, and who is named instead? | Prompt-level tracking |
| Which pages do answers cite? | Prompt-level tracking with source logs |

To compare your Google ranking with what AI Mode cites for the same query, run the free [Google Rank vs AI Mode Checker](https://nomahq.app/tools/google-rank-vs-ai-mode). It shows your organic position next to the sources Google's AI answer uses, so you can see who is cited instead of you.

## Where does Noma fit?

Noma by Nurdd is an answer engine optimisation platform that asks 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, the questions your buyers ask, every day. It shows where your brand is named, where competitors appear instead, and which pages the answers cite. It also reports which AI crawlers fetch each page and which assistants send visitors back, so the answer layer and the visit layer sit side by side.

See it on your own brand: [book a demo](https://nomahq.app/demo) or [start the 3-day free trial](https://platform.nomahq.app/signup). A card is taken at signup so billing can start on day 3; cancel before then and nothing is charged.

## What to check this week

1. Open Search Console and confirm whether your property shows the AI performance report. Export impressions by page.
2. Export Web clicks for the same pages and dates.
3. Build the GA4 AI assistants channel and note your Direct share.
4. Pick 20 buyer prompts and record, by hand or with a tool, whether you are named. The [free AI Visibility Checker](https://nomahq.app/tools/ai-visibility-check) is a quick start.
5. Add an AI option to your "how did you hear about us" form field.

Keep baseline numbers dated. If Google does add clicks later, you will want a before and after.

## How we researched this

We reviewed Google Search Central's blog and documentation, Search Engine Roundtable's coverage of Illyes's reply, Search Engine Journal, Semrush, Peec AI's documentation and practitioner write-ups on GA4 referral tracking. Facts, dates and the plan terms quoted here were checked on 2026-11-03. We did not run our own tests for this article, and the single-site figures above are one property's data, not a benchmark.
