A Perplexity visibility tracker asks Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and records whether your brand is named, which pages are cited and which competitors appear instead. The best one for you stores full answers and source URLs, repeats each prompt several times and keeps the prompt set fixed. This guide shows how to choose one and set it up in a day.

## Key takeaways

- Perplexity is a citation engine: every answer lists sources, so a tracker that records only "mentioned yes/no" misses half the signal. Capture mentions and cited URLs separately.
- One run of a prompt is an anecdote. Repeat each prompt at least five times per check and report a range, not a single number.
- Fix 20 to 30 unbranded buyer prompts on day one and do not edit them for 30 days, or your trend line will measure your edits, not Perplexity.
- Check crawl access first. PerplexityBot must be allowed or your pages cannot be surfaced in Perplexity search.
- Choose by what the tool stores (answers, sources, run counts, export), not by dashboard design. The table below turns that into a five-minute test.

## What is a Perplexity visibility tracker, and why does it need its own tool?

Perplexity answers with a short synthesis and a numbered list of sources. That makes it different from an engine that often answers from memory. Your brand can be named without a link, linked without being named, or neither. A tracker has to log all four outcomes.

Scale matters too. Perplexity's CEO said the service handled about 780 million queries in May 2025, [Search Engine Land, June 2025](https://searchengineland.com/perplexity-780-million-monthly-queries-month-456725). That is the latest figure from the company I could confirm, and it is large enough that buyers in research mode are asking it category questions about you and your rivals today.

Google Search Console will not show you any of this. Server logs show crawler visits, not answers. The only way to see what Perplexity says is to ask it, repeatedly, and keep the evidence. For the metric definitions that sit on top, see [Perplexity visibility metrics: what to track and why](https://nomahq.app/blog/perplexity-visibility-metrics). For improving the numbers, see [how to improve visibility in Perplexity](https://nomahq.app/blog/improve-visibility-in-perplexity). This post covers the step before both: choosing and setting up the instrument.

## What must a Perplexity tracker capture?

Perplexity's own developer documentation shows what a source record looks like. Its API changelog says responses include a `search_results` field with the title, URL and publication date of each result used, per [Perplexity documentation, as checked November 2026](https://docs.perplexity.ai/changelog/changelog). A consumer-app tracker should store the same three fields for every cited page, because they let you see which of your pages is being used and how fresh the competing pages are.

Use this table as the minimum spec. If a tool fails a row, you will not be able to answer the question in the right-hand column.

| Capture | Why it matters | Question it answers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Full answer text, saved per run | Lets you audit any number and read how you are described | What exactly did Perplexity say about us? |
| Brand mention (yes/no) per run | Base for mention rate | Are we in the answer? |
| Cited URLs with domain, title and date | Shows which pages and publishers Perplexity relies on | Which sources feed the answer? |
| Your domain cited (yes/no) | Separates a citation from a mention | Is our own page used? |
| Position of first mention | Early mentions are read more often than late ones | How high up are we? |
| Competitors named | Base for share of voice | Who is named instead of us? |
| Run count per prompt and date | Needed to separate noise from change | Did anything actually move? |
| Export (CSV or API) | Keeps your data if you switch tools | Can we report this elsewhere? |

The distinction between a mention and a citation is the one most often blurred. [Citation vs brand mention in AI search](https://nomahq.app/blog/citation-vs-brand-mention) explains why they need separate work.

## Why repeat runs matter more than the dashboard

AI answers vary between runs of the same prompt. SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai ran the same prompts repeatedly and reported that ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews each returned the same brand list less than 1% of the time, per [Search Engine Journal, January 2026](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-recommendations-change-with-nearly-every-query-sparktoro/566242/). That study did not cover Perplexity, so treat it as a warning about method, not a Perplexity figure.

Ahrefs followed about 37,500 citations across five AI tools every day for 20 days. It found that roughly 75% of citations that disappeared at least once returned within the study window, per [Ahrefs, October 2026](https://ahrefs.com/blog/how-stable-are-ai-citations/). Its tools were ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google, so again Perplexity is not in the sample. The lesson transfers: a missing citation on one day is not a lost citation.

Here is a worked example of what that means for your sample size. Take 20 prompts and run each 5 times, giving 100 answers. Your brand appears in 18 of them, so mention rate is 18%. A simple binomial estimate puts the margin of error at about 7.5 percentage points either side (1.96 x the square root of 0.18 x 0.82 / 100). Runs of the same prompt are not fully independent, so the real margin is a little wider. If next week shows 22%, you have no evidence of change. If it shows 35%, you do.

Noma by Nurdd has a longer treatment of this in [AI citation stability: how often do AI answers change](https://nomahq.app/blog/ai-citation-stability).

## How do I choose the best Perplexity visibility tracker?

There is no single best tracker for every team. The right choice depends on how many prompts you need, how many engines you want in one view, and whether you need the data in your own warehouse. Many vendors list Perplexity support, so use a structured test instead of a feature page. Here are the three routes.

| Route | Setup time | Repeat runs | Source URLs | Main limit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Manual spreadsheet | 2 to 3 hours | Possible but slow: 100 answers is about 2 hours of copying | Copied by hand | Does not scale past one check a month |
| Own script on the Perplexity API | 1 to 2 days of engineering | Easy to automate | Structured fields from the API | You maintain it; API answers are not guaranteed to match the consumer app |
| AI visibility platform | 1 to 2 hours | Built in, daily | Stored and grouped by domain | Subscription cost; check what each plan includes |

Whichever route you take, run this five-minute vendor test:

1. Ask to see one raw saved answer for a Perplexity prompt, with its source list. If you only see a score, you cannot audit it.
2. Ask how many times each prompt runs per day and whether sessions start clean.
3. Ask whether you can add competitors and see who is named in each answer.
4. Ask whether prompts can be locked, so edits do not break the trend.
5. Ask for the export format and the price at your prompt count, from the vendor's own pricing page.

## How do I track my brand in Perplexity in one day?

This plan assumes one person and about six working hours. It works with a spreadsheet or a platform; the platform simply removes the copying.

### Hour 1: confirm Perplexity can reach your site

Perplexity documents two user agents. PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity search, and Perplexity says it is "not used to crawl content for AI foundation models", per [Perplexity documentation, as checked November 2026](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers). Perplexity-User fetches pages when a person asks, and the same page says it generally ignores robots.txt rules.

Perplexity's crawler documentation lists PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User with their published IP ranges. Source: Perplexity.

Run the [free AI Crawler Checker](https://nomahq.app/tools/ai-crawler-checker). It shows whether PerplexityBot and other AI crawlers can fetch your site and generates a corrected robots.txt if not. Also check that your CDN or firewall is not blocking the published IP ranges, a common cause of a brand that never appears.

### Hour 2: write the prompt set

Write 20 to 30 prompts in the words buyers use, and keep most of them unbranded. Mix five kinds: category discovery ("best X for Y"), comparison ("X vs Y"), problem-led ("how do I fix Z"), brand reputation and pricing. Include two or three that name you, as a control. The [free AI Prompt Finder](https://nomahq.app/tools/ai-prompt-finder) suggests questions buyers ask in your category, tagged by intent. Noma's guide on [which prompts to track](https://nomahq.app/blog/which-prompts-to-track) goes deeper.

### Hour 3: define the record

Create one row per answer with these columns: date, prompt ID, run number, brand named (1/0), position of first mention, your domain cited (1/0), cited domains (list), competitors named, and a link or saved copy of the answer. Write the formulas in a header row now so nobody reinterprets them later:

- Mention rate = answers naming you / total answers.
- Citation rate = answers citing your domain / total answers.
- Share of voice = your mentions / all tracked-brand mentions.

### Hours 4 and 5: run the baseline

Open a fresh logged-out session or private window for each run, so earlier chats do not shape the answer. Run each prompt five times. Do not rephrase between runs. Save answers as you go. By hand, 20 prompts x 5 runs takes roughly two hours; a platform does it for you.

### Hour 6: read the first result

Sort cited domains by frequency. The top five are your "source map": the publishers Perplexity trusts for your category. Then list prompts where a competitor is named and you are not. These two lists are your first work queue. The free [Noma brand audit](https://nomahq.app/brand-audit) gives a quick outside view of how AI engines describe your brand, which is useful to compare with your hand-built baseline.

## Common mistakes when setting up a Perplexity tracker

- **Tracking branded prompts only.** They tell you Perplexity knows your name, not whether buyers who have never heard of you will meet it.
- **Editing prompts mid-trend.** Change a word and you have a new instrument. Add new prompts as a separate group.
- **Reading one run as truth.** See the margin-of-error example above.
- **Counting a mention as a citation.** Report them as two lines.
- **Ignoring where the sources sit.** If Perplexity cites review sites and communities rather than your pages, fixing your own site alone will not move the answer.
- **Tracking Perplexity in isolation.** Engines disagree about the same brand; see [why ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity disagree](https://nomahq.app/blog/why-engines-disagree).

## Where Noma fits

Noma by Nurdd is an AEO and AI visibility platform that asks 13 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, your buyers' questions every day. For Perplexity it tracks the engine separately and reports visibility, position and sentiment, lists the sources each answer cites, shows competitors named instead of you, and keeps the prompt set fixed so changes in the answer are real.

See it on your own brand: [book a demo](https://nomahq.app/demo) or [start the 3-day free trial](https://platform.nomahq.app/signup). A card is taken at signup so billing can start on day 3; cancel before then and nothing is charged. The [Perplexity visibility tracker page](https://nomahq.app/features/perplexity-visibility) shows what the Perplexity view contains.

## What does it cost, and how many prompts do I need?

Prompt count drives cost. A starting set of 20 to 30 prompts fits inside every Noma plan, including the trial's 25 tracked prompts. On [Noma's pricing page](https://nomahq.app/pricing), as checked on 2026-11-01, Starter is $79 per month in USD with 50 tracked prompts and one project, and ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude are included on every paid plan. Compare any other vendor on the same basis: price per tracked prompt at your real prompt count, with the number of daily runs stated.

Agencies tracking many clients should look at [AEO tools for agencies](https://nomahq.app/features/for-agencies), which covers projects and white-label reporting.

## How do I know the tracker is working after week one?

Run a sanity check before you trust any trend line:

1. Pick three prompts and run them by hand in Perplexity. The tracker's saved answers should look like what you see: same brands, similar sources.
2. Confirm the cited URLs resolve and belong to the answer you are reading.
3. Check that your control prompts (branded) show you at or near 100% mention. If not, brand-name matching is broken; add alternate spellings.
4. After seven days, compare each prompt's mention rate with its range. Report changes only when they exceed the range you computed.

Noma's help article on [how visibility is calculated](https://nomahq.app/help/article/how-is-visibility-calculated) shows the formula it uses, which you can set against your own spreadsheet.

## What to do with the data

Three outputs matter. First, the source map: pitch or improve the pages that Perplexity already cites. Second, the gap list: prompts where rivals appear and you do not, each of which becomes a page, a comparison or a third-party mention to earn. Third, the wrong-answer list: factual errors go to the correction process in [what to do when AI gets your brand wrong](https://nomahq.app/blog/when-ai-gets-your-brand-wrong). Re-run the same prompts monthly and report the range, not a single figure.

## How we researched this

We reviewed Perplexity's own developer and crawler documentation, published research on AI answer and citation variability (Ahrefs, SparkToro through Search Engine Journal), a Search Engine Land report on Perplexity query volume, and the Perplexity tracker pages and guides that currently rank for this keyword, to see what they cover and leave out. Noma facts come from Noma's own pages. Facts and prices were checked on 2026-11-01. We did not run a customer study, and the worked example uses arithmetic, not measured Noma data.

## Next step

Run the crawler check and the free brand audit today, write your 20 prompts tomorrow, and baseline within the week.
