**AEO governance means one owner for AI search, one shared set of buyer questions, a public brand facts page, written content standards, a process for correcting what AI answers get wrong, separate tracking for each region, and one report on one cadence. It stops teams duplicating work and leaving errors uncorrected.**

In a small company, answer engine optimisation (AEO) is one person’s job. In a large one it touches content, SEO, PR, product marketing, legal and every regional team, and each can change what AI assistants say about the brand. Without agreed owners and standards, teams track different questions, publish conflicting facts and assume someone else is fixing the errors. This guide sets out a structure that works at that scale. If you are setting up the programme itself, start with the [GEO strategy playbook](https://nomahq.app/blog/geo-strategy-2026).

## Why does AEO need governance?

- **Many teams shape the answer.** AI answers draw on your pages, press coverage, review profiles and partner pages, which different teams own.
- **Errors spread.** A wrong price or retired product on one source can be repeated by several engines until the source is fixed.
- **Results are not comparable without shared questions.** Two teams tracking different prompts cannot tell whether either is improving.
- **Engines and regions differ.** The same question can get different answers by engine and by country, so one global number hides the gaps.

## Seven steps to set up AEO governance

### Step 1. Name one owner for AI search

Give one person or team responsibility for the question set, the engines tracked, the standards and the monthly report, with named contacts in content, PR, product marketing, legal and each region.

### Step 2. Agree one shared question set

Keep a single list of the buyer questions you track, grouped by product line, stage and market, so every team measures against the same questions and results can be compared.

Our guide on [which prompts to track](https://nomahq.app/blog/which-prompts-to-track) covers how to choose and group them.

### Step 3. Publish a brand facts page

Maintain one public page with the facts AI assistants should use about your company: what it is and is not, products, prices, coverage and official links, owned by one team and dated.

We keep our own as an example: [Noma’s AI instructions page](https://nomahq.app/ai-instructions) lists what Noma by Nurdd is, what it is not, its engines, its prices and its official links, and is generated from the same code as the site so it cannot drift.

### Step 4. Set content standards for AI search

Write down the rules every team follows: answer-first openings, one page per question, sourced and dated figures, structured data that matches the visible text and crawler access that is never blocked by accident.

### Step 5. Run a corrections process

When an AI answer gets a fact wrong, log it, find the source it came from, assign the fix to the team that owns that source and re-check the answer once the source is corrected.

An error often traces back to a source the engine trusts. The guide on [what to do when AI gets your brand wrong](https://nomahq.app/blog/when-ai-gets-your-brand-wrong) walks through tracing and fixing one.

### Step 6. Track each region and language separately

Measure the same questions in each market's language and location, because engines can answer differently by country, and let regional teams add local questions under the shared standards.

### Step 7. Report one set of numbers on one cadence

Produce one monthly report with visibility, share of voice, sentiment and citations per engine and region, and review the question set and standards every quarter.

For the reporting itself, see [how to report AEO performance to a CFO](https://nomahq.app/blog/report-aeo-to-a-cfo) and [how AI share of voice is calculated](https://nomahq.app/blog/what-is-ai-share-of-voice).

## Who does what

| Team | Owns in AEO |
| --- | --- |
| AEO owner (SEO, content or brand) | Question set, engines tracked, standards, monthly report, corrections log |
| Content and SEO | Answer-first pages, structured data, crawler access, page freshness |
| PR and communications | Accurate coverage on the publications and lists engines cite |
| Product marketing | Product facts, comparisons, pricing pages and the brand facts page |
| Legal and compliance | Claims standards, especially in regulated categories |
| Regional teams | Local questions, local language pages and national review sites |

## Where Noma fits

Noma by Nurdd gives every team the same view of the answers: the shared questions, tracked daily per engine, with where you are named, where competitors are named instead and which sources each answer cites. The Studio and Agency plans hold 10 and 25 projects, so brands, product lines or regions can each have their own. Larger programmes can talk to us about [Enterprise](https://nomahq.app/enterprise).
